Emiliano Martinez was “very close” to joining Manchester United

According to the agent of Emiliano Martinez, the argentinian number one was very close to joining Manchester United in the last summer.

Martinez’s heroic performance on Friday against Ecuador secures defending champions Argentina’s position in the Copa America 2024 semi-final. Since then, the Aston Villa man has been in the spotlight.

Martinez always gave his best for his nation when it was required in the big stages. The 31-year-old helped Argentina to win the Copa America last time and also contributed significantly to the FIFA World Cup 2022, helping Argentina for the ultimate glory.

Emiliano Martinez’s astonishing performance caught the attention of many European giants in the last year. And Martinez’s agent reveals that Manchester United was very close to sealing the deal last summer before the signing of Andre Onana.

After the departure of David De Gea in the last summer, who spent 12 years with the Red Devils, united was looking for a new number one for the team. So, in the summer transfer window, United brought Andre Onana from Inter Milan as their first-choice keeper. Andre Onana ultimately reunites with former Ajax boss Eric Ten Hag at Old Trafford. However, Martinez’s agent said that Manchester United ware also very keen to sign Emiliano Martinez, but ultimately the deal failed.

The agent’s statement on Emiliano Martinez and his move to Manchester United

According to ESPN, Emiliano Martinez’s agent Gonzalo Goni said,

“Last year he was very close to Manchester United, the coach opted for Onana, because he already knew him, But everyone at Manchester United later maintained that the ideal goalkeeper to win was Emiliano Martínez.”

Despite bringing Onana as their first choice keeper to Old Trafford, the Red Devils had a bad season. Manchester United finished eighth in the league table, the worst finish in the club’s history. Many argued that Onana’s performance with the United was very bad, some supporters even criticized United’s number one for his performance for the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Emiliano Martinez’s performance with Aston Villa was good enough. Argentinian number one helped the club to secure a Champions League spot for the next season for the first time in 41 years.

Will Martinez join any new club in the summer?

Right now Emiliano Martinez is focusing solely on international matches. Martinez’s performance against Ecuador secures Argentina’s position in the Copa America semifinal. That means the world champion will meet Canada on 10th July, in New Jersey, USA.

Speaking to Emiliano Martinez’s future at Aston Villa, Martinez’s agent refused any transfer move for the 31-year-old and said,

“Everything is never decided: we are having conversations, listening, watching and we will see… But perhaps he will put Aston Villa on a par with the greats of Europe.”
