Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca recently talked about Enzo Fernandez as a player for the Blues. He has not been able to earn regular gametime under the new manager. He was good in his first season. Then, the new manager would take charge. Since joining, he has tried to field the midfielder in a more attacking position. But we have seen him flourishing more in a more central and deeper position. As a result, he has been unable to perform with the current squad. So much so that he has ended up losing his place in the starting XI altogether. Fans are now actually concerned about his future at the club.
No love lost between Enzo Maresca and Enzo Fernandez?
The Italian manager recently spoke about the midfielder’s situation for Chelsea. Many saw a top player in him. In fact he has also led the Blues on a number of occasions. But now he is not even in the starting XI. Talking to goal, Enzo Maresca would reveal that price tag had little to do with Enzo Fernandez. At the same time, he would say that players cannot always perform at the top levels.
Romeo Lavia: A better alternative?
Romeo Lavia was out due to injury for most parts of the last season. But he has managed to find his way back into the starting XI. In fact, the manager has begun to give him regular play time. Enzo Maresca recently said that he prefers Moises Caicedo and Lavia over Enzo Fernandez due to ‘physicality‘. The manager may not be wrong. But given the potential the 23-year-old has, playing regularly is key for him. So he might consider a move away after all. Real Madrid have shown some interest in signing the midfielder with a possible swap deal involving Aurelien Tchouameni.
