Enzo Maresca has given a clear update on the situation of Christopher Nkunku. Recent years have seen Chelsea Football Club at the center of much of this change, particularly in 2022 when Todd Boehly, now chairman, took ownership. It’s a large squad. The club has spent a lot of money on new players, but questions arise about the future of some players.

But Maresca has assured he wants to keep Nkunku, describing him as ‘very important for us’. Chelseaโs current league position is good. At Christmas, they lie second in the Premier League. Maresca said this is a good achievement but the club boss will not wager on a title win.
He knows the strength of other teams, most notably Liverpool, who he feels are more experienced at being able to win trophies. Manchester City are also a team that they expect will be competing for the title this season and their recent struggles. At present, they are low on players. That might hinder their title bid.
Chelsea to sell players
The looming departures of Chukwuemeka and Chilwell could be both good and bad for Chelsea. On the plus side, cutting the squad could improve team morale, or a dressing room where you are all equals, where everybody makes an equal contribution to the group. It would also allow wages to be freed, and perhaps transfer funds towards other signing.
Losing players could hurt depth in the squad, too, especially if injuries occur. It must be with Nkunku. Chelsea may pursue trophies if he stays and continues to play well for them. But if he leaves the club will lose a valuable attacking asset.
However, there is no denying that Maresca has a key part to play with his squad management when Football Italia dawns upon London on Sunday. And staying like this has to be key to his success. A man who can keep players happy and motivated but still make hard decisions about who plays and who doesn’t.
The final months of the Premier League title race are set to be very exciting this season. But Liverpool’s experience and Manchester City’s quality mean they can be considered serious contenders.

But while it would have been easy for Chelsea to write off Leeds as ‘another April fool’s game’, that is not what happened and their position at Christmas is encouraging. Our young players will have to be developed and new signings must be integrated successfully.
But there is no disputing Maresca has a role to play when Football Italia comes to London on Sunday in his squad management. It’s got to be key to his success, then, staying like this. A man who can get players in the right headspace without dropping them off the cliff by saying no to who plays and who doesn’t.
