Enzo Maresca decision that cost Chelsea the game against Liverpool

Enzo Maresca got it wrong as the Blues ended up on the losing side at Anfield. The Blues began the game well. They were getting plenty of time on ball. But they were unable to capitalize against Liverpool. At the same time, Arne Slot and his tactics were making things more difficult for the away side. The Reds kept their shape really well. They were conserving their energy and would not press unnecessarily. Noni Madueke was looking good for Chelsea. He would threaten the home side on number of occasions. Although he was unable to find the decisive touch in the box. As a result, the Blues ended up losing 2-1 away from home.

Enzo Maresca gets it wrong

The Blues managed to open Liverpool’s defense quite a few times. Noni Madueke was doing the bidding for Chelsea in the final third. He was able to get past Andy Robertson with ease. At the same time, he would dance his way around the box, constantly getting into good positions. Moreover, he even tried setting up his fellow teammates. But was unable to do so. He was one of the liveliest players on the field. But, Enzo Maresca decided to take him off. He would bring on Christopher Nkunku instead. As per thechelseachronicle, that was a big mistake on his part.

Why Noni Madueke should have stayed on?

The 22-year-old was one of the best Chelsea players throughout the game. Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho was not able to do much on his side. But Noni Madueke was able to cause plenty of trouble for the Reds. Substituting Sancho for Pedro Neto was a great move by Enzo Maresca. But bringing on Nkunku was not. Yes, the Frenchman is clinical in front of goal. But he was not playing in his natural position. So he was ineffective on the flank. Keeping Madueke on could have given Chelsea a greater chance to find their way back into the game. Especially considering the form the 22-year-old has been in this season.
