Indian decent cricketers in England

Nasser Hussain

Former England captain and current cricket commentator Nasser Hussain was born in Madras (now Chennai). His father, Raja Jawad Jo Hussain, was a Tamil-speaking Muslim and played cricket and hockey. Nasser Hussain is a descendant of Nawab Muhammad Ali Khan Wallahazar of Arcot in the present-day Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu in the 18th century.

Ravi Bopara

Another former England batsman Ravi Bopara also has an Indian connection. His full name is Rabindra Singh Bopara. Although born at Forest Gate in London, the predecessors of Sikh Ravi Bopara lived in India.

Monty Panesar

Monty Panesar has 167 wickets in 50 Tests for the country. He has taken 24 wickets in 26 ODIs. He played 1 T20 match for England against Australia in 2006, taking 2 wickets.

Former South African cricketer Hashim Amla was born in Natal, Durban, but came from a middle-class Gujarati Muslim family. Amla has scored 9282 runs in 124 Tests. The most unbeaten 311.

New Zealand’s leg-spinner Ish Sodhi was born in 1992 in Ludhiana, Punjab. When Sodhi was four years old, his family moved to Auckland, New Zealand. Sodhi has 41 wickets in 17 Tests.
