FIA’s new approach seems to annoy Mercedes and Toto Wolff

Franz Tost Germany

FIA currently seems more ready than ever on welcoming a new team to the sport which might annoy some bosses including Toto Wolff.

After a rather long time, F1 and FIA seem interested in the prospect of a new team entering the sport. The sport hasn’t seen the addition of a new team since Haas entered back in 2016.

In the latest statement, FIA president Ben Sulayem has requested an โ€œexpressions of interest processโ€ for welcoming a new team. This news will look entertaining, especially for Andretti Global who are eying an entry in the sport. Their latest $200 Million Headquarters project is also aimed at joining Formula 1 in the future.

โ€œI have asked my FIA team to look at launching an Expressions of Interest process for prospective new teams for the FIA F1 World Championship,โ€

Ben Sulayem posted on Twitter.

Expanding the sport’s grid can be profitable for the sport. It will bring new competition and faces to the paddock and it will be enjoyed more by the viewers.

Toto Wolff doesn’t seem pleased with the news

The statement from FIA can annoy quite a few bosses in the paddock including Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. Wolff has already expressed his concerns over adding an 11th team saying that it might “dilute” the sport:

โ€œIf a team comes in, how can you demonstrate that youโ€™re bringing in more money than itโ€™s actually costing: because the 11th team means a 10 percent dilution for everybody else,โ€

Wolff said last year.

โ€œSo, if one is able to demonstrate that, then we should all be sitting on the table, and cheer for such an entry. But that hasnโ€™t been demonstrated yet. And that may sound a bit dry, because it comes down to the numbers, but the value of Formula 1 is that itโ€™s a limited amount of franchises. And we donโ€™t want to dilute that value by just adding teams.โ€
