Former Barcelona defender Carles Puyol revealed who is the best manager he ever played under

Pep Guardiola

Legendary Barcelona defender Carles Puyol shares who was the best manager in his career. Puyol had an incredibly successful time at Barcelona and won multiple Champions League titles, and his side dominated La Liga. However, current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was a key to the club’s success over the years. He was promoted from Barcelona’s B team to senior management after the dismissal of Frank Rijkaard in 2009. It will be fair to say that the former Catalan manager was revolutionary in his approach with the club. He won Barcelona the treble in his first full season, including a victory over Manchester United in the Champions League final and a memorable La Liga title victory. Moreover, he led the side to another Champions League glory in 2010/11 season before finally leaving them in 2012.

Speaking on the BBC’s documentary about the Spanish manager, Puyol was full of praise for Guardiola. He said,

“For me, he’s the best by far. I think we’ll be remembered forever because of how we won. I think everyone who has been trained by him is very lucky. You see a team…if you held a match and took away the strips, you could tell which team was Pep’s because they have a certain playing style, a method and you can spot them easily.”

The World Cup winner also shared that the players at club even tried to stop him.

Being Barcelona coach isn’t easy. We’d had a very intense few years. I told him the players wanted him to stay but he’d already made up his mind.”

The legacy of Pep is a huge one for sure. Moreover, his current side are in a search for a fourth consecutive Premier League glory and another Champions League as well. He deserves immense credit and the question may well now turn to who can replace the Spaniard if his eight-year trophy-laden spell in Manchester comes to an end anytime soon.
