Former Chelsea summer transfer target Jonathan Clauss has revealed the reason behind rejecting the Blues. The right-back ended up joining Marseille.
However, it was a decision that was taken very carefully. The defender has also confirmed that the Premier League side had an interest in him.

According to reports, Chelsea were interested in signing Jonathan Clauss. However, the right-back ended up joining Marseille. Clauss had a brilliant two seasons at RC Lens. The performances also helped him get a call-up for the France national team. Therefore, Chelsea showed interest in the full-back. However, Marseille won the race for the defender.
In the end. Cesar Azpilicueta also signed a new contract with the Blues. The Blues also signed a young full-back in the form of Cesare Casadei as a long-term replacement. In the end, all the parties got what they wanted from the deal. Since the transfer window is over now, Jonathan Clauss has revealed that the Blues were really interested in signing him.
JONATHAN CLAUSS REVEALS THE REASON BEHIND JOINING MARSEILLE AND REJECTING THE BLUES
Jonathan Clauss joined Marseille in July. The 29-year-old signed a three-year deal with the club. RC Lens received a fee close to the region of € 9 million (£7.8m). However, the defender has revealed that Chelsea had inquired about him. However. he rejected the chance to go to one of the top sides in the Premier League. He has mentioned the reason for the potential of missing the World Cup squad for lack of minutes.
The full-back said,
” I didn’t want to sign for Chelsea to one day say I signed for Chelsea,” Clauss told Info Sport.“It was really to try and keep playing, to discover the Champions League. Marseille ticked all the boxes I was looking for.”
Hence, it is now quite clear that the player did not join the Blues to fulfill his World Cup dream.
Jonathan Clauss is now a regular in the Marseille squad. The full-back has made 10 appearances in all competitions. He has been solid in the Ligue 1. The Ligue 1 club are currently unbeaten and are in second place in Ligue 1 under Igor Tudor. Hence, Jonathan Clauss made the right choice of rejecting Chelsea.
