Fred might be crucial for Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United

Ten Hag will have a lot of positives to build upon in the pre-season. Under Ten Hag, Manchester United scored eight goals in 2 matches. Moreover, they have conceded just one goal. They have also looked positive, have pressed well, and looked like a cohesive unit. Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, and even Zidane Iqbal, the youngster, have impressed a lot this pre-season. However, the most impressive player has to be Fred.

Fred has played under five managers at Manchester United so far. This also includes Carrick’s three-game stint as caretaker manager. He is a player who was heavily relied upon by all the five managers. The Brazilian gives his all on the pitch and wears his heart on his sleeves. He is the defensive midfielder that United were lacking in the last few years. It is safe to say that under Ten Hag, Fred will thrive as a player in the double pivot.

Fred has been quietly performing in the pre-season

Fred has been working his magic mainly behind the scenes. He has started for Ten Hag in two of the pre-season games. Understandably, this has been the highlight of his pre-season so far. However, this is an unfair assessment of his contributions. Fred has been clinical for United in the matches. He has kept things neat and tidy in the midfield. He has put in runs, and tackles and his passing also has been on point for United. His performance has not been flashy and eye-catching but that doesn’t diminish the importance of his contributions.

It can be argued that Fred started because United lacked alternatives in the midfield. But, his selection in the first team by five different managers is a testament to his abilities. Fred is certain to start the season opener against Brighton even if Manchester United signs Frenkie De Jong. It’ll be safe to predict that Fred’s performances under Ten Hag will be just like his pre-season performances, clinical and underhyped. Just like last season, he is sure to be made the scapegoat for any failure of the midfield, no matter his performance. However, Fred will continue giving his low-key but potentially match-winning performances regardless of the criticism.
