The Ballon d’Or 2024 results have caused quite a bit of controversy. Especially when we take a look at the most coveted Men’s Best Player Award. Rodri emerged out as a winner. A big win for the Spaniard and for the Premier League likewise. The 28-year-old midfielder became the first player to win the award all the way since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008. At the same time, he would become the first ever Man City player to win the award. Their may be lots of reasons to rejoice. But many including Franck Ribery are not at all happy with the outcome.
Rodri beats Vinicius Jr. in shocking fashion
Vinicius Jr. was the one ready to lift the Ballon d’Or. But in the final few moments, it was Rodri who would win. Many thought it would be the Brazilian’s year. Especially due to his contributions to Real Madrid and its success last season. He would be vital for them in the record-making 15th UCL win. At the same time, he would win the La Liga with them. Rodri did have an edge when it came to winning with the national team as he won the EURO. But, even then, the winger had a better season overall. So he should have won. But he did not. Many believe that the reason he lost was his attitude.
Franck Ribery mocks the awards
A similar case was with the Bayern legend. Ribery was the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or 2013. But the time for voting was extended. Then, from being the favorite, he would go on to finish 3rd behind Ronaldo and Messi. So the Frenchman feels the Vinicius Jr. has been wronged the same way he was. As per goal, he would quickly make his feelings known on social media. He would go on to mock the awards with three big laughing emojis. No doubt Rodri had a good season. But Vinicius Jr. did too. Many are even going as far as questioning the credibility of the awards. The biggest problem is the ‘uncertain criteria’, which is somehow always ‘molded’ to justify the winner. Hopefully, that will change soon and we will have a fair way of crowning the winner.
