India will be looking to rebuild the team and focus on the 2024 T20 World Cup after a poor performance in the current T20 World Cup. India is behind in the current way of playing T20 Cricket and needs a proper revamp in their squad.
One of the crucial decisions that the BCCI needs to take during the selection of the squad against Sri Lanka is the selection of senior players in the squad. With plenty of cricket being played and Virat and Rohit not getting any younger, the management and the selection committee face a big hurdle in front of them. The rise of youngsters has also made the selectors think about the future of the two veterans.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Sanju Samson have been impressive in the shortest format as they play an attacking brand of cricket and do not take time to settle. They are versatile enough and good against pace as well as spin.
Rohit has been injury prone. He had been ruled out of the Bangladesh series due to a thumb injury. As he is getting older day by day, he could be more prone to injury. Hence selectors are also looking to reduce their workload and cultivate a new leader in the group.
Hardik to lead the side
Hardik Pandya after taking Gujarat Titans to a maiden IPL title has impressed everyone and is looked upon as the future leader. He has been calm and street-smart with his captaincy and has matured whenever he has captained the side. He will be taking the T20 captaincy and has ample time to form a new team for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
