Gary Neville has confirmed that Raphael Varane is his ideal signing for Manchester United this summer. The club needs to prioritise bringing in a new defender, striker and ring winger once the window reopens.

The United legend Gary Neville claims that improving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s back line should be the club’s chief priority this summer. Raphael Varane already in the final 18 months of his Real Madrid deal.

On Friday morning, Neville suggested in a wide-ranging Q&A on his Twitter page, where he encouraged his 4.4 million followers to pick his brain on everything, including football.

One fan asked Gary Neville which one player he would sign from Manchester United’s rivals if he had the chance, to which he simply responded ‘Varane‘.

Raphael Varane, a four-time Champions League and World Cup winner. He is being linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months. The Los Blancos could offload the defender in order to finance Kylian Mbappe.

Neville believes Manchester United need another striker and a right-winger.

Edinson Cavani set to leave after just one season in England. As things stand, United’s key attackers up front are Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Anthony Martial, with all three capable of playing in a hybrid position when necessary.

Neville believes attacking reinforcements are needed. A move for Varane would be preferable to a move for Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland.

And it wasn’t just potential signings that were on Neville’s mind on Friday.

Since Donny van de Beek’s arrival at the club last summer, the 46-year-old has been ‘baffled’ by his peripheral function.

Since his £40 million transfer from Ajax last summer, the Dutchman has been relegated to cameo positions from the bench and has failed to break into Solskjaer’s side.

‘I’m perplexed by what’s going on with him,’ Neville said. He must be very depressed.’

Neville was also critical of the way Manchester United has treated games in recent weeks, calling for a ‘higher pace’ to break down low-block teams.

He emphasised Rashford and co.’s ruthlessness in scoring the first goal against Granada and requested more foresight from the start.

‘Sometimes they move it too slowly around the pitch and don’t play forward,’ Neville said when asked if they can change.

Solskjaer’s goalkeeping conundrum was also another topic Neville addressed during his Q&A thread on Friday.

When asked who he preferred out of David de Gea and Dean Henderson, Neville responded: ‘Both have questions to answer for different reasons. Can DG get back to his level and can Henderson get to the level DG was at. Henderson deserves the last league games to test him.’
