The meteoric rise of La Masia wonderkid Lamine Yamal has certainly raised questions about Germany’s defense.

Young boy from Spain being heavy on German snipers

Lamine Yamal is a 16 year old winger who plays for Barcelona. He has certainly been a revelation in Xavi’s Barcelona squad. People often compare him with Lionel Messi. He is a pacey right winger who can efficiently change the direction. He has quick feet and his moves are so unpredictable that defenders find it hard to decipher it. As a result, Lamine Yamal can breeze past the defensive line with ease.

With his inside and outside cut, he can confuse any defender. In this Euro 2024 he is performing well for Spain. He and Nico Williams have formed a lethal pair for Spain. Lamine Yamal has already provided an assist to Carvajal in the Euro 2024 competition.

He can run at defenders without any hesitation. On top of that he can provide pitch perfect crosses into opponent’s penalty box.

Can Germany stop Lamine Yamal?

Julian Nagelsmaan has used Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah as the two main center back in the German backline. Antonio Rudiger is an aggressive old school defender.

He prefers clearance and tackles to stop opponent’s attacking move. But he is playing at the right center back position for Germany and Lamine Yamal plays as a right winger. So, players like Jonathan Tah and David Raum should stop him at any cost. It will certainly be a difficult task for the 16 year old wonderkid.

According to Goal Germany coach Julian Nagelsmaan said,

“He’s a big talent. He was really consistent in this season but his job is to deliver that for a few years. I think there are not many players who are that stable at this age but of course, I guess he has a very good surrounding, he needs a lot of people around him who have his back. He has big qualities, he’s very good in the one v ones, but he’s only 16 years old so there are also big chances for our players in that regard to counter him.

I think you can’t always defend him because he’s so variable, he goes on the inside and the outside. His left foot is stronger than his right foot but he can still use his right foot so we need to be prepared for several things. But on the other hand, he does not have so much experience at this level when things don’t go his way or when the opponent tackles him a little bit stronger. This is not a plan that we want to hurt him or tackle him all the time but of course he’s an interesting player, he’s doing a very good job and for the neutral fan he’s definitely a joy to watch.”
