Former Chelsea boss, Graham Potter, made an appearance at the Sky Sports Monday night football. During the conversation, he revealed what happened behind the scenes at the club in his tenure. He revealed his big mistake regarding the owners which led to the end of Potter-ball.
The former Brighton became the first managerial appointment made by Todd Boehly and co. He replaced Thomas Tuchel in 2022. However, his job only lasted for seven months. He was given the task to lead Chelsea’s new project, and was given plenty of young talented ballers. The Blues’ spent British record breaking money on new signings that summer.
He was kicked out of the club for returning the lowest points per game of a Chelsea manager till date. The Englishman avoided limelight for almost eighteen months before making his appearance as a pundit at Sky Sports. He discussed about his experiences at Chelsea and rumours of him joining Man United and the England national team.
Speaking about his time at London, he says;
“The culture at Chelsea over a period of time has got them success so I respect that, I suppose you could feel that from the outside, the media and the supporters. Perhaps the mistake I made was that I thought with new ownership there would be a change of culture.”
“But culture runs a lot deeper than that. Before the World Cup, we’d only lost three matches in the Premier League — one to Arsenal, who were top at the time, and to Newcastle and Brighton away — but the world was closing in and we were close to crisis.”
“Maybe he [Potter] was the problem, and I could understand that as the results weren’t what they expected.”
What next for Graham Potter?
The former Swansea and Chelsea boss, has been hired by popular media channel as football pundit to analyze alongside Jamie Carragher. This is a new role in his career, where he will be quizzed about his experiences in his managerial career and asked to drop his expertise on football.
Potter was linked to Man United, Crystal Palace and even a return to Brighton to replace Roberto De Zerbi during summer.
The 49-year-old also turned down Ajax in May, where he could’ve made a return as a manager. He has also been linked to the possibility of managing the Three Lions. Potter wants to take his time and assess himself before taking a big decision again. He regrets his previous job and feels “gutted.”
In a recent interview with the Telegraph, he says;
“It’s a bit like grieving process in a way, it gets better with time.”
“There’s a humiliation that it doesn’t go well.”
“I was sacked after seven months of a five-year contract after being taken from Brighton, so there’s all that on a human level you have to deal with.”
Chelsea sniff around the possibility of signing Brazilian centre-back
Chelsea are linked with Nottingham defender Murillo for some time now. Top journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed his insights to Caughtoffside.
The Brazilian has impressed the Blues’ scouts with his performances at Nottingham. The club feels that he is ideal for the manager and is an upgrade over the likes of Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile.
However, it won’t be easy to get his services as the Garibaldis deem him as “untouchable” unless a humongous offer comes. Juventus tried to sign Murillo in the summer, but Forrest closed the door on their face. Until next summer it is almost impossible for any club to sign him. Chelsea will reportedly keep tabs on the Brazilian and scout other targets available.
Romano dropped the bomb regarding this news, he says;
“So guys, I’ve seen the rumours about Murillo and Chelsea, and what I can say is that Chelsea are following several players in the centre-back position but no talks taking place yet.”
“There are so many links but there’s nothing concrete or really advanced now.”
“Also, Murillo would be very expensive for any club as when Juventus thought about him last summer, Nottingham Forest didn’t want to open the doors for him to leave.”
