Grosjean takes blame for Mercedes test delay

Romain Grosjean

Former F1 driver Romain Grosjean assures his test with Mercedes is still on the table and takes full blame for the delay so far.

After a horrific crash at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean left F1. The Frenchman has since been driving in IndyCar after recovering from the crash.

Soon after the crash, Grosjean was offered a test driving seat at Mercedes by Totto Wolf so he could get a proper see-off from the sport. However, the circumstances have not let the test happen so far.

Grosjean was asked while hosting a question and answer session on YouTube if he had driven the Mercedes yet. To which the former Haas driver replied:

“Not yet and it is 100 per cent my fault.

“I haven’t been able to give Mercedes some dates that I am back in Europe. If you have been following me on socials you will know I have moved to the US, Miami.”

Grosjean was called in for a demo run at last year’s French Grand Prix, only for covid to disrupt those plans. His busy IndyCar schedule has halted any further plans. He explained:

“I moved in December 2021, got really busy. I was meant to drive the Mercedes at the French Grand Prix and after that a test day at Le Castellet, Paul Ricard, Due to Covid, the date of the French Grand Prix got moved and I had a race the same weekend.”

“We wanted to do the test day but there was some quarantine between France and the UK so for Mercedes, it was getting very complicated.”

Will Grosjean get another chance?

Mercedes and Totto Wolf have been considerably patient. However, missing opportunities like this will not help Romain Grosjean.

Frenchman further revealed that a backup date had been planned in September at Silverstone. However, due to some logistic issues, the track couldn’t get booked and the test never happened. He explained:

“We had a date for September at Silverstone but the track couldn’t get booked.”

The Andretti Autosport driver ensured that even after the hard luck the test will definitely happen in the future. Grosjean praised Wolf and Mercedes for keeping good contact with him and updating him about the possibilities.

Grosjean said:

“I have been in contact with Mercedes, I saw Toto in Miami for the F1 and he told me yes, the test is happening and I don’t doubt it, Mercedes has been really good at contacting me all the time but it is my fault, I haven’t been able to find time to get back to Europe and do the test.”

Romain Grosjean is excited about the test and hopes that he will definitely sit in a Mercedes car in the coming future. Totto Wolf also seems to give many opportunities to him.

However, driving with Mercedes is one of those opportunities that you really have to take advantage of. We can say Totto has been extremely patient so far.
