Sevilla’s central defender Jules Kounde appears to have indicated that he may soon leave the club. The Frenchman has been linked with a move away, with Chelsea and Barcelona fighting for his signature.
The versatile France international, who can play at right-back or in central defence, has been linked to the Blues for a while. Chelsea made attempts to sign Kounde from Sevilla but were unsuccessful. The 23-year-old eventually stayed put.
Chelsea were, however, always anticipated to rekindle their interest in Jules Kounde. The Blues have reached an agreement on a £55 million transfer to bring him to Stamford Bridge. However, new reports suggested that Barcelona have swooped in and reached an agreement.
What Did Kounde Do?
Recently, he stopped to greet some fans at the club’s training grounds. The player himself has made a gesture that all but confirmed that he will be leaving Sevilla.
One supporter came up to Jules Kounde and wished him well and said, “Good luck wherever you go, have a great time” to which the Frenchman replied, “Thank you.”
Another fan then begged Kounde to not join Barcelona, who are thought to be Chelsea’s major competitors for his services. To this, Kounde made no response.
According to reports, Barcelona has pushed Kounde to reject Chelsea’s approach and stay in La Liga. But Sevilla would rather sell to the Blues than a direct domestic rival. Kounde is reportedly open to moving to West London but prefers the Blaugrana.
Should Kounde move to Chelsea, he will be their second defensive reinforcement. Thomas Tuchel is rebuilding his backline after the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
They signed Kalidou Koulibaly, and are now looking for another defender. Tuchel wanted to go for Matthijs De Ligt and Nathan Ake, but the pursuit was unsuccessful. He will now hope that a deal for Kounde can go through.
