Manchester United are back in the transfer market, and as ever, they are busy. This time they are close to signing Arsenal’s 18-year-old prodigy, Ayden Heaven. But it is increasingly looking likely that young defender weighing up his future with Arsenal, will instead switch to Manchester.
It could be the gods that are a blessing for United, but will Heaven? Or can he make any impact on what is already going to be an incredibly chaotic season for the Red Devils? It’s time to dig into the potential transfer.
Why Manchester United Want Heaven in Their Squad
It has been so much more unpredictable than an episode of a soap opera: Manchester United’s season has flown by so far. They’ve led fans down a variety of paths, whether pulling their hair out or wildly celebrating. But they sure as hell need reinforcements.
When it comes to the defenses, it has been as solid as a biscuit in tea, so maybe lining up the young brigade this time around could be United’s way of building a better basis for the future beyond this current crop. Arteta once labelled him ‘remarkable’, which in footballing parlance means that you’re not expecting the next Maldini just yet.
Old Trafford has already been visited by heaven, watching United win the Europa League against Rangers, and he’s spoken to Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. Through offering him a new contract, Arsenal are trying to convince him to stay. Yet the lure of a way in to Manchester United’s first team looks to be pulling him away from North London.
Will Heaven Be United’s Next Big Star?
It’s always a gamble to sign young players. Every Cristiano Ronaldo has a Bebe. Most United fans, for good reason, have put any memory of Bebe out of their minds.
Heaven, at only 18, is not expected to walk straight into the first team, but his potential was caught by United’s scouting department. But, with Ruben Amorim said to be coming in as United’s next manager, it could be on experienced reinforcements rather than youth prospects.
Also, Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu, another young talent, isn’t unlikely to come to United on top of that, besides the fact that it suggests they are investing in the future rather than improving their struggling squad right away.
The State of Manchester United: Is Heaven Enough?
It’s not sugarcoating things; United’s Premier League campaign has been a disaster. Sitting in the bottom half of the table, 12 points behind the Champions League positions, they need to come alive.
Heaven’s signing is nice, but he’s not the solution that United needs right now. What’s needed are tried and trusted players who can steer them into European qualification places. Unless he’s secretly a Paolo Maldini in glamour boy mode, the boy and his mates are gone. Heaven otherwise be damned, even if his name does sound like it might just be divine intervention.
Final Thoughts: Should United Fans Be Excited?
Let’s be frank, Ayden Heaven is a pretty exciting prospect, but fans shouldn’t get carried away with it. He is not going to come in and fix United’s defensive problems overnight. But this could be a smart long-term investment by the club.
I am a football fan myself, so as I say, this transfer is both interesting and risky. Immediate fixes are what United need, but they also need to plan for the future. He could be a decent addition if Heaven gets development and game time. He’d rather stay at Arsenal, but if he’s just coming in to sit on the bench, he can.”
That being said, if he does sign for United, the Arsenal fans will be left wondering how Arsenal let another young talent slip away. For United fans, though, hope this doesn’t end up being ‘another promising youngster who suddenly vanished into the reserves.’
