‘He’s fast and young’- Alpine boss reveals why they went for Gasly over Ricciardo

The Alpine F1 team signed Pierre Gasly for the 2023 season choosing the Frenchman over Daniel Ricciardo.

Pierre Gasly was linked with Alpine for quite a time as his AlphaTauri exit seemed inevitable. In the end, it became official when Alpine announced that Gasly will be driving for them in 2023.

Now, the 2023 lineup looks pretty sad for Formula 1 fans. Both Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo won’t be on the grid.

Daniel Ricciardo has accepted the fact that he won’t be on the grid in 2023 much to the dismay of his fans.

Ricciardo said in a recent interview:

“I think the reality now is I won’t be on the grid in ’23.”

Haas and Williams are the only teams with vacant seats now. Haas looks all set to extend Mick Schumacher’s contract. Williams might be a team who would welcome Ricciardo however at the moment it seems highly unlikely.

Ricciardo was also in talks with Alpine at one point for a possible seat. The talks got quiet, and it was expected by Ricciardo that they would sign Gasly:

“To be honest, the Gasly news I was aware of. I knew they were talking for a while and I knew they were very interested in Pierre, so I would say I was prepared for that, and no surprise,”

Ricciardo said.

Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer also confirmed his talks with Ricciardo. He reasoned choosing Gasly over Ricciardo because he is “fast and young”.

“At the beginning we discussed with a few drivers, including Daniel, and Pierre meets the criteria that I had to a tee – he’s experienced, fast and young,”

said Szafnauer.

We might see Ricciardo go for a reserve driver role at Mercedes as Nyck de Vries moves to AlphaTauri.
