It is the 8th edition of the T20 World Cup, to be organized in Australia. BCCI recently declared the world cup squad of India. It was nothing new as most of the players were included But there were some questions raised with the selection. One of these was Harshal Patel over Mohammad Shami. Ex-India chief selector questioned BCCI about Shami’s exclusion.

Ex BCCI Chief Selector questioned on Shami’s exclusion
K Srikanth’s statement:
“ Mohammed Shami should have been there. We are playing in Australia. Look at the bounce there. Shami has a high-arm action, makes the ball go away from the left-hander and into the right hander. In the first three overs, two wickets will definitely fall. Why haven’t they taken him? Why have you picked Harshal Patel? You have Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. When you have such three pacers, Shami should have been there. He has done very well in Australia all the time. I just feel Shami should have been in the squad in place of Harshal Patel. They will say he is not in the scheme of things. Why not I don’t know. How can you say that? Shami is your frontline bowler. Look at his IPL record in the last few years. It’s fantastic. He has got the early wickets. You need early breakthroughs. Who else is going to give them to you?”
Shami is one of the front-line bowlers of the Indian Team. Be it any format he is included in the playing 11 or in the squad. But since a few series, he is being kept aside from the T20 side. He has not played a single t20 game for India. He does possess good experience as well as t20 stats. But Harshal Patel is chosen over him. Harshal Patel has been included in major all-series after t20 2021 world cup. He missed out on the Asia Cup along with Jasprit Bumrah and has been back with the Indian team.
Indian team may go with the bowling combination of Bumrah, Bhuvi, and Harshal in the t20 world cup. This edition of the World Cup is being hosted by Australia. Australian grounds are large and pace bowler supportive. Shami could have been a good option there. He bowls at the right pace and length on such pitches. Moreover, such conditions are favorable for Mohammad Shami.
Mohammad Shami t20 stats
He has an average of 31.55 and an economy of 9.34 in the T20s. He has not taken many wickets. Economy and wicket-taking ability at the earliest may be one of the reasons. In 2022, he had an average of 24, an economy of 8, and took 20 wickets in total. This shows he has been good in this year’s IPL. Still, BCCI has kept in reserve of the T20 world cup squad.
