Cricket

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fame, Varun Chakravarthy disappeared after the T20 World Cup 2021. During his stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders, he got the name of “mystery spinner”. His variations and unorthodox action made him stand out. Varun’s successful IPL 2021 season got him promoted to the senior national team.

Eyeing his performance in the UAE leg of the IPL, Varun Chakravarthy was surprisingly picked for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. His selection raised many eyebrows around the cricket fraternity. However, Varun’s happiness was short-lived. He failed to make an impact in the World Cup. He just clipped one wicket in three games.

Post that, Varun abruptly disappeared from the scene. Following the ICC event, he was dropped from the team. He reportedly got dropped as he failed the mandatory fitness tests. Meanwhile, India’s domestic season is about to kick off. Varun Chakravarthy spoke to Sportskeeda ahead of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

“I’m sure that I’ll knock the doors down again,” Varun Chakravarthy eyeing a comeback

The 31-year-old is confident of returning to the national team. He stated that the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy will be critical to his success. Varun feels that if he performs well in the SMAT and IPL 2023, he can surely make a comeback.

“The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a very important platform for me. I’m sure that I’ll knock the doors down again because I’ve worked hard. Let’s see, if God is kind enough, I’ll get the chance again. Yeah, exactly. I do know SMAT is going to play an important role, as well as the next IPL. In these two tournaments, if I do well, I’ll get the chance again”

Varun brushes off the ‘mystery spinner’ tag

The architect turned cricketer brushed off his mystery spinner tag. He said that it was the media and not him that labeled him a mystery spinner. Varun Chakravarthy further added that he is just a leg spinner with variations and nothing else than that.

“I’m basically a leggie who has other variations. I bowl a little quicker than the others. I didn’t label myself a ‘mystery spinner’. It just got stuck from the media. That’s how it happened. Yes, I’m someone who disguises his variations well but I don’t really consider myself a ‘mystery spinner’ ”

He is hopeful of a successful domestic season. Moreover, it will be interesting to see if KKR retains him for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League
