A lot of national players are already playing in the domestic tournament and have given brilliant performances in the five matches that they have played.

In this article, we will be looking at three of the Indian players that are likely to get the South African ticket for the ODIs.

The Indian Test team has already left for South Africa and will be back in action on the 26th of December with the first Test to be played in Centurion. The team for the ODIs is yet to be announced.

3 Players who can make the cut into the ODI squad for South Africa

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Arguably the best batsman India have at the moment, he enthralled one and all with his batting in the IPL this year. He also became the orange cap holder, amassing 635 runs in the tournament.

His performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy is also outstanding at the moment. In just 5 matches, he has hit 4 centuries and has made 603 runs at a very high average of 150.75.

So, it would be quite unfair if the selectors overlook him and choose Shikhar Dhawan instead who hasn’t been able to perform very well in the domestic tournament. Gaikwad deserves a place in the team, given the form he is in.

Venkatesh Iyer

Another star from this year’s IPL, Venkatesh Iyer was in sublime form for the Kolkata Knight Riders. The tall left-hander from Madhya Pradesh became a rage all over India and made huge headlines.

He was thus chosen for the home series against New Zealand as well and because he is a potential all-rounder who can certainly replace Hardik Pandya in limited-overs cricket.

And right now, the latter is in bad shape as he is nursing an injury, so it is a golden opportunity for the youngster to make his ODI debut as well.

If we talk about his performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, there also he has been given the role of a finisher for Madhya Pradesh as he was given in the T20I series against New Zealand.

Playing against Kerala in the tournament in his second match, he scored a brilliant century and took his team to a mammoth total of 329.

He also scalped 4 wickets in the match. He is currently at the fourth position of highest run-getters, amassing 349 runs at an average of 69.80 in 5 matches.

Yuzvendra Chahal

The wiry leg-spinner is also in contention for a spot in the ODI team. Chahal has been overlooked by the selectors for quite some time now and hasn’t been given a chance in the last few months.

When India Senior Men’s team last played an ODI series against England, he was not drafted into the playing XI of all three games. So, it’s still uncertain whether he would be given a chance or not in the upcoming series.

Chahal might also find it difficult to get a spot because there are other youngsters and senior players ahead of him who will get the nod from the selectors such as Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin.

But, after his recent performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, it seems almost impossible not to include him in the side.

In his 5 matches, he has picked up 14 wickets at an impressive average of 15.00 and is leading the top wicket-takers chart of the tournament.

The kind of form he is in right now, he should be the first choice as a spinner in the ODI series against South Africa.

So, these are the probable 3 players that can make the cut for next month’s ODI series. The selectors would be watching the domestic tournament closely so as to select the best players for the team.

Thus, it is imperative that the correct players get selected based on their performance in the domestic tournament.

The bench strength should be good enough and each player must get a chance to shine in the series.
