Indian spinner Jayant Yadav has replaced Washington Sundar in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa starting on the 19th of January.

So, Yadav will stay back after the completion of the Test series.

Sundar was picked up by the selectors for the ODI series. He would have given an added all-rounder impact along with Ravichandran Ashwin and Venkatesh Iyer to the squad. But, according to reports, before boarding the flight from Mumbai to the rainbow nation, Sundar tested positive for COVID-19 and thus was barred from boarding the flight.

Jayant to stay after Test series: BCCI official

According to a Times of India report, a BCCI official told the leading daily that Jayant Yadav will stay behind and replace Washington Sundar for the ODI series.

It has been decided that Jayant will stay back in South Africa. There was very little time to get any other player inside the bubble in Mumbai.

said the official.

As of now, Jayant hasn’t played any of the games in the ongoing Test series against South Africa. In all three Tests, Ashwin became the number one choice spinner.

Now, in the ODI series, it will again be difficult for Jayant to make it into the playing XI as there will be the presence of Ashwin and Venkatesh Iyer who will be preferred by the team.

Washington Sundar hasn’t played a game and has remained off the field for a long time. He got injured ahead of the India vs England series last year.

Sundar also didn’t participate in the second leg of the IPL held in the UAE and also in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021.

He also missed the home series against New Zealand that included Tests and T20Is.

India is all set to battle it out with South Africa in the three-match series that will start in Boland Park, Paarl on the 19th of January.

The first two ODIs are in Paarl on the 19th and 21st of January while the final ODI will be played in Cape Town on the 23rd of January.
