Former Indian pacer Madan Lal criticized the intent of Team India in the WTC final against New Zealand. He said the match could have been drawn if the Indian players spend some more time on the pitch on the final day.
India ended up being all out for 170 runs, setting New Zealand a target of 139 which captain Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor chased down.
Madan Lal on Team India after WTC Final
“New Zealand were the deserving team and their captain deserves a lot of credit. The way they got our batsmen out and their field placements. I feel that captaincy was top class. It is disappointing, it’s not that India are a bad team. They are actually a very good, balanced team. But our problem away from home has always been there. If you don’t make runs, it becomes very difficult to win matches,” Lal told Aaj Tak.
Lal also questioned the role of the Indian opening pair. “Shubman Gill is talented but he has to improve on his temperament. In English conditions, you have to stay there for a long time. If you look at Rohit and start playing shots chances of scoring runs become less,” he said.
Report Card of Indian Batsmen in WTC Final
Rohit Sharma (6/10)
Rohit Sharma has scored 34 runs in the first innings and caught out in the slip. In the second innings, he scored 30 runs only. He started to hit the ball well. But in both the innings, he failed to make it big. India needed much more from this experienced player.
Shubman Gill (4/10)
Though Gill is a young player in Test cricket he needs to be more confident and careful about his shots. He was very disappointing in this final match. He scored total of 36 runs in two innings. The management may drop him in the next cycle.
The most disappointing innings were delivered by Pujara in the finals. He totally failed to deliver in both innings. He scored a total of 23 runs in this match. He had prior experience playing in British conditions. But he could not handle the strong Kiwi pace attack well. He had to stay in the middle for a long time but he failed.
Virat Kohli (5/10)
The skipper Virat Kohli has already being questioned for his strategy in WTC Final. It was not so good with his batting too. He managed to score 44 runs in the first innings. But in the second innings when the team required more, he failed. He scored only 13 runs.
Ajinkya Rahane (6/10)
The vice-captain Rahane was also failed in the second innings. He had scored 49 runs in the first innings. His dismissal pattern is now a matter of talk. But he couldn’t manage to get runs in the second innings. He scored 15 runs only in the second innings.
Rishabh Pant (4/10)
Pant was also very low in the WTC Final. He scored only 4 runs in the first innings. After his performance in Australia and then against England, fans were hoping much from him. He scored 41 runs in the second innings. But that was not enough to fight.
The performance of Jadeja in overseas conditions had been questioned a lot of times. This time he couldn’t do that much with the bat. He scored total of 31 runs in this match.
Madan Lal also added that India was behind New Zealand in preparation for the final. The Kiwis played a two-Test series against England before the one-off Test. India arrived nearly a month after New Zealand in England. They played an intra-squad match in preparation.
