Delhi Capitals were one of the favourites coming into the tournament and they have just announced that by winning their first match. The newest skipper in the Indian Premier League Rishabh Pant won his first game ever as a captain against one of the most experienced side the Chennai Super Kings and his mentor MS Dhoni.
Delhi skipper won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Capitals missed few of their key players in the first game but that didn’t affect them much. The Super Kings had an amazing team combination with many match winners, but the game didn’t end in there favour.
The match was played at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, where batting in the second innings becomes much easier than the first innings. CSK gave a target of 189 runs to DC which was chased in less than 20 overs.
Chennai Super Kings Innings:
At the end of 20 overs, CSK post a total of 188-7. Youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad & South African batsman Faf Du Plessis opened the innings for Chennai. Mr. IPL Suresh Raina made a comeback into the side after missing the last season.
CSK lost two early wickets of Gaikwad & Du Plessis, England all-rounder Moeen Ali who played his debut match for CSK & Suresh Raina slowly accelerated the innings and built up a partnership of 53 runs. Suresh Raina became the first player to score a half-century in the 14th edition of the IPL, unfortunately, he was runout by Chris Woakes.
Skipper MS Dhoni was out for a duck by young bowler Avesh khan. In the death overs Ravindra Jadeja & Sam Curran made 45 runs and lost one wicket at the last ball.
Delhi Capitals Innings:
The Capitals looked aggressive since the first ball, Prithvi Shaw & Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings for DC. It was just phenomenal the way they played, they gave no chances to CSK bowlers, it seemed they were just each and every smashing ball.
They made a partnership of 138 runs in 13.3 overs, Dwayne Bravo took the wicket of Shaw when he was on 72. Soon after he got out Dhawan was dismissed at 85 by Shardul Thakur.
Skipper Pant hit the winning shot for his team, The Capitals finished at 190-3 in just 18.4 overs. Shikhar Dhawan declared the Man of the match.
CSK vs DC Notable Performances:
Delhi’s openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan played a magnificent inning for their team, from the very first ball they had an aggressive intent towards the game. Shaw made 72 of 38 balls and Dhawan made 85 of just 53 deliveries. Shikhar Dhawan became the man of the match, here is what he had to say in the post-match presentation-
“I really enjoyed my batting. Was enjoying the way I was hitting the ball. It was important to get off to a good start because we were chasing a big total. I have to innovate a few shots and I enjoy taking up challenges. I was playing the ball close to the body. The wicket was a little sticky. I knew my game plan.”
Youngster Avesh Khan took two big wickets of Faf Du Plessis & MS Dhoni and both for a duck.
Delhi Skipper Rishab Pant has grown up admiring his idol MSD, here is what he had to say after winning against his mentor.
“It was very special walking out for the toss with MS. He has been my go to man. I have learnt a lot from him.”
Delhi Capitals will play their next game on the 15th April against the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai will play Punjab Kings on the 16th of April.
