What a convincing win for the Chennai Super Kings(CSK) after having a disastrous defeat in the last game, they beat the Punjab Kings(PBKS) by 6 wickets. Finally, we witnessed a one-sided contest in this edition of the IPL after a series of thrillers.
Captain Cool MS Dhoni played his 200th match for CSK, and coincidentally he won the toss and elected to bowl first. Many thought of yet another high-scorer at the Wankhede but CSK made great use of the toss and the grass on the surface. Both the teams had no changes on their sides.
Punjab Kings Innings:
Same as the last game that the Kings won, the Karnataka boys skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal opened the innings for their team. PBKS lost all the big wickets in the powerplay, at the end of powerplay they were 26-4. Deepak Chahar executed his plans extremely well, he bowled all his 4 overs by the 7th over.
After losing all the big names in quick successions, one of the highest traded players Shahrukh Khan came into the attack. He started to hit the ball and timed it well, he scored 47 runs off 36 balls. Khan’s contribution took the total to 106-8. The CSK bowlers did a fantastic job by restricting them to a small total.
Chennai Super Kings Innings:
As CSK are known for following a set pattern, they opened with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis. Gaikwad got out early in the powerplay. English all-rounder Moeen Ali came to bat at no.3.
Faf and Moeen Ali slowly built up a partnership of 66 runs. This partnership took PBKS away from the game. Once Moeen Ali got out CSK lost a handful of wickets, but the asking rate was low that they managed to pull it off in style. Sam Curran hit the winning four for his team and CSK chased the total in 15.4 overs.
CSK vs PBKS Notable Performances:
Indian Pacer Deepak Chahar who has now been one of the main bowlers of CSK’s bowling unit, recorded his best ever IPL figures. Skipper Dhoni always looks at him as a wicket-taking option and over the years he has emerged as one of them.
Chahar bowled a brilliant spell of 4 overs and took 4 big wickets by conceiving just 13 runs. His delivery against Mayank Agarwal which got him out is a dream for any pacer hitting the middle stump. Here is what the pacer had to say after being the player of the match at the post-match presentation-
“I think Mayank’s wicket I enjoyed the most – a dream ball for a bowler to swing and hit top of off stump. You want to pitch it close to middle and then move to hit top of off. It’s a big responsibility I’ve been having since the last four years and Mahi bhai has shown faith in me. Hopefully I can deliver in some more matches. As a bowler my plan is to bowl dots if I don’t take wickets. The bowlers from the other end will also be able to take wickets.”
MS Dhoni who played his 200th game for CSK has been one of the strongest pillars of the team through ups and downs, he has been the heartbeat of CSK over the years. Winning his 200th match-make the day more special for MSD, here is what he said at the post-match presentation.
“Makes me feel very old (smiles, on being asked how he feels to have played 200 games). Been a very long journey. Different conditions, countries, a very interesting journey. Chahar is somebody who has developed as a death overs bowler too. If I’m looking to attack and there is movement I try to bowl him out because he gets more out of the pitch. As a bowling unit we have more resources. I was looking to attack, so bowled his four overs and it helps in becoming fit because to bowl 4 successive overs you need to be fit.”
CSK will next play RR on the 19th of April and PBKS will play DC on the 18th at Wankhede(Mumbai).
