After losing three matches in a row in this IPL the Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) register their first points on the table as they beat the Punjab Kings(PBKS) by 9 wickets. A new venue for both the teams, where SRH wins after 3 games the PBKS loses 3 games in a row.
Barring the flip of the coin, nothing went right for Punjab Kings, They won the toss and elected to bowl first. They lost their skipper early and had a quiet powerplay. The Kings kept losing wickets at regular intervals that ended up getting skittled out. The reinforcements in the batting department have not worked for Punjab Kings. Playing their first game at Chennai, they could not adapt to the surface or the conditions.
PBKS had two changes Fabian Allen and Moises Henriques were added to the side, whereas the Sunrisers had three changes Kane Williamson, Kedar Jadhav, and Siddharth Kaul came into the side.
Punjab Kings Innings:
Same as the previous game skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal opened the inning for the Kings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck the wicket in the 4th over itself. Since then PBKS kept on losing their wickets and were unable to build up a partnership. Most batsmen got starts but none were able to bat deep and make a substantial contribution.
The SRH bowlers did a fantastic job by restricting the Punjab Kings at a low total. The kings playing their first game at Chennai, could not adapt to the surface or the conditions. Young bowlers Abhishek Sharma and Khaleel Ahmed took the most no. of wickets for their team.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Innings:
Chasing a low total, the explosive duo of Jonny Bairstow and skipper David Warner came out all guns blazing and raced to 50 in the powerplay itself. Warner scored 37 off 37, while on the other hand, Bairstow remained not-out and took his team to victory.
The introduction of spinners led to Warner’s downfall and also a decline in the scoring rate, but they were always ahead of the curve. Williamson and Bairstow played risk-free cricket and took their team over the line with eight balls to spare. The unbeaten 48-run stand comprised just one four and one six. Punjab descends to the eighth position with this defeat.
SRH vs PBKS Notable Performances:
By making 63*(56) SRH opener Bairstow took his team across the line and played a match-winning inning. He has always been a key player for the team. He was awarded the Player of the match, here is what he had said at the post-match presentation-
“It’s pretty humid, it’s pretty hot especially with the day game. I am just absolutely over the moon to get over the line. It’s been a tricky start for us. We’ve been very close in most of the games, just haven’t got over the line, probably a bit of carelessness.”
After opening the account at the points table, SRH skipper David Warner is a happy man. Here is what he said in the post-match presentation-
“Very pleasing. Our bowlers did a fantastic job and reduced them to a low score. They executed well and we won batting second. (On his dismissal) It was probably a mixture of both (mistimed and fatigue), I should have tried to hit it in the grandstand but that happens in cricket.”
SRH will next play DC on 25th April and PBKS will play MI on 23rd April at Chennai.
