Yet another jaw-dropping game of cricket in the Indian Premier League. The defending champions Mumbai Indians(MI) win their first game of the season against the two time champions Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) by 10 runs, in a nerve-racking encounter in Chennai.
Chennai’s pitch is traditionally spinner friendly and it proved to be one in the second innings. Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya bowled a spell to remember, one of their best figures. Their bowling in the middle overs brought MI back into the game.
KKR won the toss and as the tradition continues, they elected to bowl first. The Mumbai Indians had only one change in their side, Chris Lynn was replaced by South-African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock. KKR remained unchanged as they won their first game against SRH.
Mumbai Indians Innings:
As Lynn missed out the game, Quinton de Kock and skipper Rohit Sharma opened the innings last night. De Kock got out early for just 2 runs to Varun Chakravarthy. MI’s one of the most reliable players Suryakumar Yadav came in to bat at no.3 along with the skipper.
Rohit and Surya had a good partnership of 76 runs in 9 overs. Suryakumar Yadav scored 56 runs off just 36 deliveries. Skipper Rohit just fell 7 short of scoring his 40th half-century in the IPL.
MI collapsed drastically in the death overs. KKR bowlers did a great job by restricting MI to a small total of 152, Andre Russell took 5 wickets by giving just 15 runs in 2 overs(One of the best spells of IPL).
Kolkata Knight Riders Innings:
The Knight Ridders started off pretty well, Nitish Rana and Shubhman Gill made up an opening partnership of 72(48). After Gill got out Nitish Rana continued to hit hard from one end. He scored another half-century 57(47) this game, 2 consecutive 50s for Rana.
After Rana got out in the 15th over, the batting line-up collapsed, no big partnership was built to save the game. MI spinners Chahar and Krunal bowled exceptionally well to take the game away from KKR.
KKR vs MI Notable Performances:
MI’s leg-spinner Rahul Chahar bowled a match-winning spell for his team, it was his spirited effort that gave MI the belief. He became the match of the match for his 4-27(4), here is what he had to say in the post-match presentation-
“I was confident in my abilities as I have been playing the IPL for 2-3 years. My confidence is sometimes down, but Rohit shows confidence in me to lift me up. Mumbai Indians takes care of its players during the off season as well, and that’s why it is such a special franchise.”
And there can be no one much happier than the winning captain, this is what Rohit Sharma had to say after winning such a nail-biter-
“Was a great fightback, excellent fightback by each one of them. You don’t see a game like this often. Lots of confidence from this game and we move forward. KKR batted brilliantly in the powerplay. We have done the finishing part well as a team, just that we need to understand the surfaces here and adapt.”
MI will play their next match on the 17th of April against SRH and KKR will play RCB on the 18th April, both in Chennai.
