What a thrilling encounter it was in the first match itself, the Royal Challengers Bangalore start off the new season with an emphatic 2 wickets victory. While the defending champions Mumbai Indians lose the first match of this 14th edition of the Indian Premier League.
Though it is very rare that RCB wins the toss but it happened in the first game itself, they won the toss and elected to bowl first. With a bunch of new players on both sides, the teams were looking up towards an exciting game.
Mumbai Indians had only two changes into their side from the last match they played(IPL 2020 Final) that were Chris Lynn & debutant Macro Jansen. RCB had a few changes in their side Aussie allrounder Glenn Maxwell, debutant Rajat Patidar, Daniel Christian, Harshal Patel & Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamison played today.
Mumbai Indians Innings:
MI posted a total of 159-9 at the end of 20 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma alongside Aussie batsmen Chris Lynn opened the innings. During the powerplay, MI lost their skipper in an unfortunate run-out for just 19 runs of 15 deliveries. After a slow powerplay Suryakumar Yadav came down to bat at no.3, both Yadav and Lynn slowly built up a partnership of 70 runs in 30 balls. It seemed like the game accelerated from here on.
But the challengers got quick breakthroughs and the Mumbai Indians then started losing their wickets at successive intervals. In the death overs, they only made 24 runs and lost 5 wickets which had the wicket of the super strikers Pandya brothers and Keiron Pollard. In the end, they posted a target of 160 for RCB.
In the last over Harshal Patel took 3 wickets and gave only one run, he was the highest wicket-taker for RCB 5 wickets. Chris Lynn was the hig hest run-scorer for MI, he fell just one short of scoring a half-century, he scored 49 runs off 35 balls.
Royal challenger Bangalore’s Innings:
A new opening pair for RCB skipper Virat Kohli himself opened the innings along with Washington Sundar. RCB started off well in the powerplay but lost two quick wickets of Sundar & Patidar till the end of the powerplay.
In the middle overs, Glenn Maxwell and Virat Kohli accelerated the innings and came one step closer to the victory. In the 13th over Bumrah got the skipper out and soon after him Maxwell too got out.
AB de Villiers played till the last over from one end, unfortunately, he got run out in the last over but the team managed to finish the game in their favour. Mohamed Siraj played the winning shot for his team.
MI vs RCB Notable Performances:
Harshal Patel became the man of the match by taking 5-26(4). He performed exceptionally well. This is what he had to say at the post-match presentation-
“Happy to be here and with the faith they have shown in me. I was just focussed on my execution and the most important thing was to make use of my momentum. It is my first fifer in 98 T20s and the fact that it has come against MI makes it all the more special.”
In the top order Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers & Glenn Maxwell played responsibly and also scored runs for their team.
For Mumbai Indians Chris Lynn played exceptionally he made 49(35), Suryakumar Yadav too played a short cameo but couldn’t make it a big one.
RCB will play their next game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on the 14th April in Chennai and MI will play KKR on the 13th of April in Chennai as well.
