IPL Retention: Surprises before the Auction

, Six Sports

Vivo IPL 2022 will be a thrilling contest between the ten teams across different parts of India. The previous edition saw the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK being crowned the champions for the 4th time. The next edition will witness the entry of two new teams into the league. Before the mega auctions, the BCCI gave the 8 franchises an opportunity to retain a few players and build a core.

No Chahar in CSK , No Chahar in MI

Chennai Super Kings will once again enter the field with Captain Cool MS Dhoni leading them. Surprisingly he was 2nd on the retention list and has taken a pay cut and will now receive 12 crores. Ravindra Jadeja, their premier all-rounder was retained at a price of 16 crores. Orange Cap holder of 2021 was another obvious choice for CSK alongside Moeen Ali who was a revelation for the team.

The team with the most number of IPL titles Mumbai Indians have retained their skipper Rohit Sharma alongside speedster Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Kieron Pollard.

Rabada and Rashid : Big calls by DC and SRH

Delhi Capitals after 2018 seemed to be on the track. The initial years of the team were tragic and now the franchise has discovered its mantra. They have retained their captain Rishabh Pant, opener Prithvi Shaw, Proteas pacer Andrich Nortje and left-arm spinner Axar Patel.

Sunrisers Hyderabad were a consistent team of IPL but their last outing was a complete disaster. They seem to look forward to the mega auction and build a mighty squad and have thus retained only three players i.e. Kane Williamson, Umran Malik, Abdul Samad.

KKR in the hunt for a new leader once again

Kolkata Knight Riders, the two times IPL champions and 2021 runners-up, retained its core- Caribbean superstars Andre Russel and Sunil Narine, mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and last year’s hero Venkateshwar Iyer.

Rajasthan Royal had another forgettable campaign in the UAE. The team surely aims to include more match winners to strengthen all their departments. Skipper Sanju Samson, star batter Jos Buttler, and young Indian sensation Yashaswi Jaiswal.

Purple Cap holder Harshal Patel not in RCB’s scheme of things

Miscalculations and more miscalculations have always cost Punjab Kings over all these years. Their captain KL Rahul has parted ways with the franchise and there have been only 2 retentions made by PBKS- Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Sigh.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will have a new leader ahead of IPL 2022. Virat Kohli will still be the most important batter for the team and was obvious retention for the franchise. Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj will also feature for the team in their next season.

The retentions made it clear that the upcoming mega auction will be the grandest IPL auction ever. The 8 teams have made a lot of surprise calls like the Pandya brothers not being retained by MI to seasoned campaigners like Faf Du Plessis, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kagiso Rabada not finding a place in their existing franchises.

IPL 2022 : More twists to come?

Players like David Warner and K L Rahul clearing their ties with their teams too has added an element of excitement in the cricket world.

With two new teams making their way to the auction table, the wait seems to be too long for fans to see how their favorite franchises turn out before the start of IPL 15.
