IPL- RR vs PBKS: Captains steal the show in a close encounter

What a magnificent game of cricket it was last night. Another last ball finish this season of the IPL in just 4 four games. Punjab Kings(PBKS) won the game against Rajasthan Royals(RR) by just 4 runs on the last ball.

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to field first. They have started all new this season with a new captain and a new team, Sanju Samson captained the side for the first time. He played a sensational knock by scoring a century in his first game but fell just 4 short to make the game on their side. On the other hand, the team with the new name Punjab Kings batted really well throughout, skipper KL Rahul played a match-winning innings for his team.

It seems this year the youngsters are all ready to set new benchmarks. Since the first game, the new and uncapped Indian players are just stealing the show. Last night as well young pacers RR’ Chetan Sakariya and PBKS’ Arshdeep Singh played incredibly for their respective teams.

Punjab Kings Innings:

The Karnataka boys KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal opened the innings for the Kings. The partnership between them started off well, but then young pacer Chetan Sakariya got Mayank as his first IPL wicket.

Then came in the Universe Boss Chris Gayle at no.3. Gayle and Rahul had a partnership of 67 runs in the middle overs. In the 10th over Riyan Parag took the wicket of Gayle, he was playing at 40 (28).

Punjab kings continued to roar even after they lost wickets. Deepak Hooda and Rahul accelerated the innings and built up the huge partnership of 105 runs. KL Rahul played another brilliant match-winning knock of 91(50) taking the total to 221-6.

Rajasthan Royals Innings:

English Allrounder Ben Stokes and Indian batsmen Manan Vohra opened the innings for the Royals but got out early in the powerplay. Skipper Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler slowly tried to build up a partnership to gain momentum in the game.

Wickets fell regular intervals for RR, but the skipper was standing tall at one end. He scored the first century in this edition of the IPL. He almost took the game away from the Punjab Kings, but couldn’t take his team across the winning line. The Royals lost the game by just 4 runs.

RR vs PBKS Notable Performances:

Sanju Samson became the first man to get a hundred on IPL captaincy debut, this was his 3rd IPL hundred. He scored 119(63) to remember and despite RR falling short by just 4 runs, the man of the match was given to the RR skipper. Here is what he had to say after receiving the award-

“I think the second part of the innings was the best I ever played, took my time and respected the bowlers, whereas in the first part I was not timing it very well. I took the singles and got into a rhythm and then I started to play my shots in the second half. It automatically happens, when I focus on my skills and watch the ball and react.”

PBKS skipper KL Rahul also played an exceptional inning once again for his team. He made 91 runs off just 50 deliveries, he just missed out of his century by 9 runs. Here is what the winning captain had to say at the post-match presentation-

“I didn’t stop believing in the team, and we knew a couple of wickets will bring us back. The game went deep only because me included, we dropped some sitters. We have been tentative sometimes, and it’s important for us to play fearlessly at times, so I am happy that the expectations are being understood and met.” 

Punjab Kings will play their next game against Chennai Super Kings on the 16th and Rajasthan Royals will play the Delhi Capitals on the 15th April, both at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
