It was an entertaining game of cricket that we experienced last night in this edition of the Indian Premier League. The Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) win their third consecutive game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) by 10 runs at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.
SRH won the toss and invited the Knight Riders to bat first. Both the teams had a good playing XI according to the conditions. The Chennai pitch is traditionally known for its spinning track, henceforth both the teams had some interesting spinning options.
This year KKR bought one of the most experienced players to their side, Harbhajan Singh, for 2 cr, his experience and skill will provide strength in the bowling line-up. SRH have the best bowling attack in the league, their spinners have the ability to deceive the opposition.
Kolkata Knight Riders Innings:
Nitish Rana & Shubhman Gill opened the innings for KKR, Rana started off with a crackling four into the covers. Gill and Rana had an opening partnership of 53 runs of just 30 deliveries. Gill got out to the mystery spinner Rashid Khan for just 15 runs.
After that, young Rahul Tripathi came in to bat. Both Rana & Rahul played a terrific inning, they both were hitting each and every ball out of the park. They both had a partnership of 93 runs in just 55 balls until Rahul Tripathi got to Natarajan.
In the death overs, Rana got out at 80(56). Skipper Eoin Morgan & Windies all-rounder Andre Russell got out early. Wicket-keeper batsmen Dinesh Kartik played a short cameo of 22*(9) and managed to take the team to a decent total. At the end of 20 overs, KKR made 187-6.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Innings:
SRH’s skipper David Warner along with wicket-keeper batsmen Wriddhiman Saha opened the innings. They lost 2 early wickets of their opening batsmen. Manish Pandey and Johnny Bairstow slowly accelerated the innings and stood strong to build up a partnership of 90(60). Bairstow got out at 55(40) to the Aussie pacer Pat Cummins in the 13th over.
KKR kept taking wickets at regular intervals because the run rate kept on increasing. Manish Pandey was playing from one end but couldn’t build up a partnership that could them across the line. SRH felt just 10 short to be on the winning side.
SRH vs KKR Notable Performances:
KKR’s opening batsmen Nitish Rana became the man of the match as he scored 80 runs off just 56 deliveries and that too in such challenging conditions to bat on. Here is what he had to say at the post-match presentation-
“In my mind there’s only one thing: play my shots if the ball is there. Just backed myself. Have played a lot of spin growing up.”
After defeating SRH 3 times in a row, there is no one much happier than the skipper himself. This is what the winning captain Morgan had to say at the post-match presentation-
“Delighted. Build up to the tournament has been pretty good. The camp that we had pre-tournament, the guys gelled well. Never quite sure what performance they will produce. Today was quite magnificent the way the guys batted. Nice to start like this it’s obviously a long tournament. We were very happy with the score.”
KKR will play their next game against the defending champions Mumbai Indians on the 13th of April at Chennai and SRH will play Royal Challengers Bangalore at the same venue on the 14th April.
