Jadon Sancho helped Chelsea narrowly avert total humiliation from Ipswich Town in a disappointing 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. For those Chelsea supporters, the match was immensely frustrating and summed up brilliantly the team’s present state—that of inconsistency, poor mistakes, and a performance level so far away from what this team should be.
Again a Slow Start from Chelsea
Chelsea was never operating at their highest level from the kickoff. It was a performance lacking in effort, and anyone would have expected them to have done minimal hard work towards Ipswich. The tempo was missing in Chelsea’s passing. And the urgency was certainly missing, and Ipswich were, for the most part, sharper and more urgent in the first half. Two notable plays from the match were Cole Palmer’s attempt at injecting creativity with a couple of incisive passes. And there was a good header from Nicolas Jackson that just missed the target. There were, however, scant moments of excitement. Stamford Bridge had a notably quiet atmosphere, with the supporters apparently in the mood for a cagey and tense afternoon.
Shocking performance by Ipswich Town
The worst possible scenario for Chelsea played out at the start of the second half. Chelsea’s focus completely dropped against one Ipswich corner, and they left their defense wide open to a shot on target. However, with a delivery so simple, they failed to clear their lines in the penalty area. Taking full advantage of the defensive confusion, Ipswich striker rose above the rest to powerfully head the ball beyond Petrović and give the visiting side an astonishing and unexpected 2-0 advantage.
There was anger and frustration thick in the air in the stadium, in the fans, and in the players. Chelsea’s spending, on the hundreds of millions they have spent to put together their current squad, has been huge, but very little of it has been successful in overcoming teams from the lower leagues. While these teams are less heralded. The reality is Chelsea were outperformed by Ipswich on the pitch. It is because they showed more work ethic and they are more organized. Ipswich’s lead on the scoreboard was entirely deserved. There was no debate about that. On the contrary, they approached the match far more aggressively and with far more determination, were much sharper, maintained much sharper focus throughout, and played an organized game plan, which is why they looked like the more prepared and purposeful team.
Jadon Sancho Steps Up When It Matters
It was quite a while after the goal before Chelsea seemed able to answer back. They looked nervous and unsure, and their final moments passed were not good enough. However, Enzo Maresca changed some players, and finally, one of those changes did work. Thankfully Jadon Sancho was at the right place at the right time. He kept his cool before kicking it hard into the top of the goal. It was a very important goal, whether for Chelsea or for Sancho himself. Scoring this goal could really do him the world of good after the problems he had at Manchester United and then under the pressure of joining a top club again.
What happened after Jadon Sancho’s goal?
Unfortunately for Chelsea, that goal wasn’t enough to win this match. After scoring that goal, they tried to score another one, but Ipswich Town defended very well after that goal. And ultimately this match ended with a 2-2 scoreline.
Chelsea fans looked very disappointed after this game. Considering the amount of money they have been spending on this squad. And ultimately, they can’t even beat a club that is fighting a relegation battle. Chelsea are currently fighting for the top 6 spot in the league table, and they had to win this match to make it easy for them. But they dropped points against Ipswich. So now it’s going to be a hard battle for Chelsea from now on for the top six spot at the league table.
