Wasim Jaffer has his say on Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh as India lost the first ODI against New Zealand. Both the youngsters made their ODI debuts in this match and were impressive in their opening match.

Jaffer about Umran Malik

Wasim Jaffer while talking to ESPNCricInfo said that ODIs might suit Umran Malik more than the shortest format. Jaffer feels he can keep on hitting the hardback of the length in ODIs a lot more consistently than in the T20s without worrying much about getting hit. Malik can use the bumper and a surprise yorker mixed with a consistent back-of-length ball which keeps the batters guessing.

The margin of error is very thin in the shortest format with a risk of getting hit for a boundary or a six every ball. But in ODIs, you can keep the batters quiet for a longer period. And with such a lethal pace, it is very difficult to have great control of the ball. So Jaffer feels that ODIs might suit him more and also yield wickets for India going forward. Wasim Jaffer also said that India needs to persist with Umran for a longer period.

Jaffer about Arshdeep

Speaking about Arshdeep, Jaffer said that Arshdeep has a very big role to play for India in the coming years. He can get a swing early on in the innings and thus can be a wicket-taking option for India in the powerplay. At the death, he has got a lethal yorker and good change of pace delivery. Jaffer is pretty confident that Arshdeep will learn with time and by playing more matches for the country.

India lost the match eventually with Latham and Williamson scoring a record partnership to help New Zealand win. New Zealand chased 307 in just 47.1 overs with 7 wickets in hand. India would be desperate to bounce back and level the series in the next match.
