INDIA are currently playing against South Africa. They will move to Australia for the t20 world cup 2022 on October 5. India received a huge blow in the Asia Cup as their key all-rounder – Jadeja got ruled out from the t20 world cup owing to his knee injury. Axar Patel replaced him. But recently there is another huge blow as Jasprit Bumrah sustained a back injury and is set to miss the World Cup. He is the leader of the bowling department and a key player in its success. His exclusion raised certain questions and one of the debates is nation vs franchisee participation.

Nation vs Franchise debate

T20 cricket is the most exciting form of cricket. This fills the heart of cricketing fans with new emotions. With the introduction of this new form of cricket, there has been a turnaround in the face of cricket. The t20 leagues were introduced and players are paid relatively higher than cricket boards. Players sometimes prioritize these leagues and get injured and miss their international matches for the nation. This is not a new allegation against the cricketers.

Jasprit Bumrah plays for Mumbai Indians in IPL. He has not missed a single season and is a regular player for the team. But sometimes due to over schedule or some fielding attempts he gets injured and forced to miss some matches. Now the debate rises on whether the franchise is more important than national duties. The cause of injury may be participation in all 3 formats for the team. His workload is to be well managed. In recent years he suffered a quite number of injuries. This includes Thumb injury- in 2018, Lower back stress fracture- in 2019, and now back injury- in 2022.

According to data, since the start of 2018, India played 92 t20is. Bumrah was not part of the team for the 64 t20s. But he participated in 74 t20is for Mumbai Indians. This is a matter of concern as the team wants his service in the mega events and his absence creates an extra burden on the playing XI. This world cup year, he has played only 5t20i so far. He was even excluded from Asia Cup to manage his workload.

The question will still hover as the cricketing year passes by. This will be challenging for the newcomers and they have to choose wisely whether they are ready to sweat out in a much-needed match for the national team or want to sit, enjoy and earn higher by participating in different leagues all over the globe.
