Barcelona signed Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix signed for Barcelona on loan deal last season. However it looks like Barcelona can complete the Joao Cancelo signing. Cancelo joined Barcelona from Manchester City on a loan deal. The Portuguese full back was no longer trusted by Pep Guardiola in his squad. Cancelo was usually seen on bench for almost every match whether it’s Premier League, FA cup and sometimes Carabao cup. His chances of a Champions league appearance was extremely low as well. This thing frustrated the Portuguese full back who had a fall out with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. Cancelo is still a Manchester City player who came on loan to Barcelona for one season. He came to the club along with Joao Felix who is also on loan from Atletico Madrid. Both the players came to Barcelona who were struggling with injuries and financial issues.
Cancelo’s loan deal was till 30 June 2024 which is over as of now. Barcelona’s season was also a disaster for the fans. Their financial issues continued and the club was already in a crisis. Xavi in the middle of the season announced he will be leaving the club by the end of the season. However later in the season the Spanish manager changed his decision and decided to stay with the club. However after some issues with Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta, he will be leaving at the end of the season. Hansi Flick will be the new Barcelona manager for 2024-25 season. Xavi had a pretty decent tenure in his time at Barcelona. He made his return to the club with a league title. Xavi also help Barcelona to get their long lost identity back and played tiki taka football again. Barcelona was still struggling in European games.
How Barcelona will plan Joao Cancelo signing
Barcelona last season was a pretty bad team defensively. They had their one of the worst defensive record in quite some time. According to Pep Guardiola it’s much more difficult to manage a club like Barcelona than other clubs. Being a very big club the manager is always under immense pressure to perform and win trophies with the club. The criticism for the players and the manager is also very high as the expectations from the fans is high. It is usually very difficult to manager things outside of football for the manager. Hansi Flick did a pretty good job with managing Bayern Munich. He ended up winning the sextuple with the club. Flick also beat his current club with a scoreline of 8-2 in the Champions league. Being the manager who embarrassed Lionel Messi, Flick will be expected to do well in Spain.
Barcelona currently are pursuing Nico Williams who is having a great Euro Campaign with Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. However Hansi Flick will keep other positions as his priorities as well after looking at the injuries last season. One of his priorities will be a healthy full back and Cancelo is the type of player Flick will want in his squad. Manchester City will be looking to sell Cancelo this summer and have offered him around for €25m. Cancelo had many offers from Saudi this summer however he rejected them all to play for Barcelona. It can be a tough choice to start Cancelo in the starting lineup after Jules Kounde performed great last season at the right back position for Barcelona. On the left back position Balde had a great season.
