The transfer window comes around soon, and Chelsea will again be busy in the market. With multiple departments requiring strengthening, a new name has joined their target list. Brighton striker Joao Pedro has been revealed to have shown interest in making the switch to Stamford Bridge, fueling rumors of a possible transfer this summer.
At just 23, the Brazilian has left his own big impression on the Premier League. Since he signed from Watford, he has emerged as the main man of Brighton’s attack for Roberto De Zerbi. Despite it not being an easy season for the Seagulls, Pedro’s form has seen some of the top clubs in the division take notice.
Chelsea Eye Joao Pedro Amid Striker Search
Chelsea’s constant quest for a dependable goal-scorer keeps making the headlines. Chelsea has lacked consistency in front of goal, and the requiremnent of a striker who could provide double-digit returns cannot be ignored. Although the names of Liam Delap and Emanuel Emegha have been mentioned, the transfer of Joao Pedro is picking up pace.
Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown has claimed Pedro has already told people close to him that he would like to move to Chelsea. Brown indicated the move is a step up for the player, particularly with Brighton missing out on next season’s European football.
Not everyone, however, is sold on Pedro at Chelsea. Whilst his talent is unquestioned, there are doubts about his ability to be a consistent line leader. His goal return, whilst respectable, has been variable and questions surround whether or not he can be the reliable number nine Chelsea so badly require.
Additionally, Brighton won’t sell their star forward cheaply. The south coast club is reportedly going to ask for about £70 million for his services. This might scare away suitors unless the consistency of Pedro improves.
Transfer Value, Competition, and Strategic Fit
Pedro’s potential fee is indicative of the inflated market of today and Brighton’s leverage. The club have built a reputation for disposing of their top talent at premium, and this will be no exception. Chelsea are keeping a close eye, but they’re not the only ones chasing him.
Liverpool and Arsenal are also said to be keen, and Pedro has reportedly been willing to move to either club. Chelsea have no established striker at their disposal currently. So, the opportunity for more assured minutes may have advantage if they pursue the transfer of Joao Pedro.
Incoming Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will have the final say on whether Pedro is suited to his system. With the Italian having a reputation for preferring technically adept, flexible forwards, Pedro would be an excellent tactical fit. But the risks and potential rewards must be balanced by Maresca and Chelsea’s recruitment staff.
In addition to their targets up front, Chelsea also intend to strengthen at the back. Aston Villa centre-half Ezri Konsa has been a top defensive target. With Chelsea needing to give a new look to their backline, Konsa is considered a good bet to bring some stability and leadership to the side.
The transfer window is now approaching. The transfer saga of Joao Pedro might turn out to be one of the most followed tales this summer. The Brazilian striker has already indicated that he wishes to join a larger club. Chelsea might be able to offer him the platform he is seeking. Still, with questions surrounding his consistency, a hefty price tag, and stiff rivalry from other top teams, the choice will not be an easy one for the Blues.
