Former player thinks that there’s some issue with the Chelsea’s recruitment model.
Chelsea’s recruitment model under doubts
Former Blues winger Joe Cole has been expressing his take on the project this week. He has the opinion that there’s some systematical problems with Chelsea’s current project. The program has been facing some major doubts in the recent weeks. The fans were also seen raising their voice over the matter against the owners. Their game on Tuesday night against Southampton saw some fans protesting over their project to the ownership.
The Blues thrashed the Saints 4-0. It was a much-needed victory for the side. They have been struggling for form in the recent weeks. The game saw goal scorers like Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella.
The Saints are also finding it hard to get results in their favour. They’re currently fighting the relegation battle. In the meantime, Chelsea also needed a huge win and big performance from the team. That is actually what they did on Tuesday night. They’re trying to book their spot in contention for the Champions League.
Neto was impressive playing as the no.9. The Portugal international was also one of the goal scorers. He also ended an amazing night with a goal and an assist.
Speaking to TNT Sports, the Portuguese striker expressed on how he felt playing as a centre-forward, He was asked if he enjoyed it, he said: “a lot, because I don’t have to defend as much!!
“I don’t have to run back as much so I have more energy to run in front. I have a free role to play there… I’m really enjoying playing there. I want to help the team that is the most important thing.”
Cole on Chelsea’s recruitment model
The former west London winger, Joe Cole, thinks that his former sides project lacks something. He has the opinion that they are making repeated mistakes in the goalkeeping department. And that their whole recruitment model could be wrong.
Speaking on the Dressing Room podcast, he said: “It’s something systemically wrong because you can’t have nine goalkeepers on your books and not know which one is your number one.
“You’ve got Kepa [Arrizabalaga] out on loan, Petrovic out on loan, you’ve bought some young, promising ones.
“If your system works well, you shouldn’t make as many mistakes that have been made with goalkeepers.”
The west London side’s main goalkeepers, Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have been struggling between the sticks. Both have been facing major criticism throughout the season.
Sanchez joined the side from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023. He came for a fee around £19 million. Jorgensen has been competing with the Spaniard for being the first choice. But the Sweden international hasn’t been better either. In Chelsea’s loss against Aston Villa, the Swede made an error which led to a late win for Villa last week.
Cole has recommended a goalkeeper for Enzo Maresca’s side
As per TBR Football, Joe Cole has a goalkeeper suggestion for the Blues. He has named Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels as a great option. He has asked his ex-side to take a look at his performances in the Premier League.
On the podcast, he said: “Do you know who I think is one of the best goalkeepers in the league at the moment? Sels from Forest.
“Mate, I’m telling you. Watch him play. Assured, makes saves…
“I don’t know whether he’s having a golden period in his time but they are out there. You’ve just got to pick the right one.”
