18-year-old Josh Acheampong is making quite a name for himself. The Chelsea star has enough potential to have a promising future. Many fans were actually waiting for him to break into the first-team. But in a surprising turn of events, the Blues have sent the defender into exile. There is concern all over the football world regarding the same. The defender is an academy graduate for the club. He has risen through the ranks since joining the London-based side as an under-8 player. But now he may never even play for them again. What went so wrong that the Blues had to take such a drastic step?
Chelsea want control over Josh Acheampong
As per The Athletic, the Blues want the 18-year-old to sign a contract extension. Especially since many top clubs are lurking to sign him in January. But, Chelsea have take it a bit too far. They have made it clear that Josh Acheampong wont play for the first-team or the U21 squad unless and until he agrees for a renewal. The issuance of a direct ultimatum hasn’t gone down well among the fans. The defender runs out of contract in 2026. So there is no need to act in a hurry.
Did Chelsea make the right move?
Firstly, there is nothing wrong with a club trying to secure a future for their bright young talents. But Chelsea have gone about it the wrong way. They are not just pressurizing Josh Acheampong into signing a new deal. But, at the same time, they are compromising with his future too. Lack of gametime at this stage of his career will halt his progress. Also, this may end up pushing him away from the club. Already clubs like Real Madrid are willing to sign the 18-year-old in January. It will be interesting to see how the situation pans out.
