Jules Kounde on Chelsea radar as contract talks stall at Barcelona

Jules Kounde once again demonstrated his worth to Barcelona, scoring the match-winning goal in extra time to secure the Copa del Rey trophy against arch-rivals Real Madrid. Although playing out of position at right-back this campaign, the French centre-back has been a rock-like and driving force under Hansi Flick, winning admirers all over Europe with his displays. But increasing interest from the Premier League — and uncertainty over his contract — may define his future over the next few months.

Barcelona are keen to reward Kounde for his dedication and versatility with a new contract. The 26-year-old’s existing deal expires in 2027, and the Catalan club have already opened negotiations with his representatives over an extension. However, as negotiations are ongoing, clubs throughout Europe — and especially in the Premier League — are keeping developments under close observation.

Chelsea are still one of Jules Kounde’s most tenacious fans. The West Londoners have been said to be in regular communication with the player’s representatives despite being rejected by the defender in 2022, when he chose Barcelona over a transfer to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are now positioning themselves to make another move as his contract situation remains unresolved.

Manager Enzo Maresca is reported to be interested in strengthening his backline ahead of the forthcoming campaign, and Kounde is seen as a player who would bring both experience and stability to the rearguard. Being able to play at centre-back and right-back offers precious versatility, and something that sits comfortably with the tactical requirements of Maresca.

The current valuation of the defender is approximately €60 million — a sum that, although large, might not be out of Chelsea’s reach considering their historical interest and continued rebuild under new management.

Premier League Rivals in the Race for Jules Kounde

Chelsea are not the only ones tracking Jules Kounde’s availability. Rumors suggest that the Premier League’s top two clubs, Liverpool and Manchester City, are actively pursuing the French international. The two clubs appreciate his ball control, tactical awareness, and experience of big games — qualities that would add muscle to their own very strong teams.

Liverpool, gearing up for life with a new manager, view Kounde as an option to reinforce their depth at the back, particularly given injury and legs-getting-old concerns in their present backline. Manchester City’s quest for steady greatness makes them constantly seek out top-shelf players who can slot perfectly into Pep Guardiola’s methodology.

Arsenal have also been monitoring Jules Kounde for a while and might return to the scene if he were to become available. With Mikel Arteta looking to make additional signings to launch a more credible title challenge in the future, the Frenchman would be an excellent addition. The Gunners are, however, playing a more cautious hand at the moment than their London counterparts.

Uncertain Future Amid Contract Talks

Kounde’s commitment to Barcelona is not in doubt, but the sluggish pace of contract negotiations could leave the door open for a summer exit if agreement on terms cannot be reached. The La Liga giants are dealing with several financial and building-up challenges, which might restrict their capacity to provide the better terms the player demands.

For the time being, Jules Kounde is still a key player in Barcelona’s first XI and an integral part of their future plans. But increasing interest from the Premier League, combined with stalled negotiations, means his future is far from certain. As Jules Kounde impresses on the pitch, the transfer limelight becomes brighter. Chelsea are applying the pressure, staying in touch with his camp and waiting for a possible summer transfer. Barcelona could face a fierce fight from Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal to retain their defender.
