Juventus in the race for Dries Mertens?

Dries Mertens has received another offer for his signature. This time it is from Juventus. The Bianconeri have been attempting to re-sign Alvaro Morata for quite some time. He continues to be their priority. However, getting Atletico de Madrid to agree to his return is proving to be very challenging.

Dries Mertens has been one of the best attackers in the Italian League for some time now.  In 396 games for them, the Belgian has scored 148 goals and registered 90 assists. He plays as a central striker but is equally capable of playing on the wing.

Mertens has completed his contract with Napoli and is a free agent. It was revealed that his hometown club Royal Antwerp were considering a move for him. However, Juventus are in the race as well.

The Status On Mertens

According to Tuttojuve, Juve is now aiming to add him as a backup for Dusan Vlahovic to their team. According to the rumour, the Old Lady are willing to give him a yearly salary of 5 million euros.

The Italian heavyweights are in need of attacking depth up front. They recently signed Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina. But they cannot go into the new season with the Serbian as their sole striker. They will need cover, and Mertens can be a perfect option. The departure of Paulo Dybala to Roma makes signing another attacker even more critical.

It remains to be seen how this transfer pans out. Mertens is a bonafide legend in Naples, and their all-time top scorer as well. Departing the club for a hated rival will surely tarnish his legacy at the Diego Maradonna Stadium. A return to his native Belgium is the more romantic option as well. However, from a financial standpoint, Juve could be Mertens’ best choice. He is 35 years old and is unlikely to get a salary higher than what they offer.
