The new Liverpool boss, Arne Slot, won’t have a busy transfer window. The Reds have a steady squad, leaving Slot with less transfer work this summer. Slot has a good team to work with even if the club don’t make transfers. Moreover, it will be thrilling to see who all thrive under Slot’s managerial system. One player that could shine under the new boss is Cody Gakpo. The 25-year-old has done well but has never stood out among Liverpool’s attacking options. However, Gakpo displayed his brilliance in several games last season for the Reds and was also outstanding for Netherlands in their first Euro 2024 game.
Cesc Fabregas believes Gakpo needs to be given instructions
Although the Liverpool players were upset with Klopp’s exit, some of them performed exceptionally in the long-time manager’s last season. Gakpo netted 8 goals and gave 5 assists in 35 Premier League appearances. However, former Spanish footballer, Cesc Fabregas said that the Dutch winger needs to be told what to do.
While speaking to BBC, Fabregas said,
“I think he is a functional player what I have seen of him at Liverpool. It seems to me that he is a type of player who needs to be told constantly what to do, but he has got great ability.”
The football pundit further mentioned,
“He is not the most creative player, but he is dangerous, he has got an eye for goal, he has good movement, he attacks well the space.”

Why the 25-year-old could be important for Liverpool in the season ahead?
Gakpo has the ability to play in different positions although his natural position is on the left wing. The Dutch winger played in the midfield as well for Liverpool last season. The 25-year-old plays on the leftwing for the Netherlands, however, he plays more centrally for Liverpool. With the right training from the new manager, Gakpo could do wonders. Although, giving the player a fixed position would be convenient, making him play in different positions could help him build on the talent he already possesses. Additionally, the 25-year-old’s performance at the international stage in the Euros could be a boost for Arne Slot. Gakpo played all three group-stage games and also managed to score 2 goals. However, the Dutch team finished third in their group and will only qualify for the next round if they are one of the four best third-placed teams.
