Kylian Mbappe, the captain of France, deemed their Euro 2024 campaign an abject failure. The 25-year-old had a challenging tournament for his country and ultimately fell short of leading them to the final victory.
In order to go to the final matchup with England, Spain defeated France in the Euro 2024 semifinals.
Kylian Mbappe called their journey a complete failure. The former PSG forward had a great campaign with the national team in the last major tournament, in the 2022 World Cup. In that tournament, the French captain scored 8 goals and assisted twice, including a hat trick in the final against Argentina but failed to win the second consecutive World Cup title.

But this tournament was quiet for Kylian Mbappe, who started five matches for his country, and only scored once thanks to the penalty against Poland in the last group game. In Euro 2024, Kylian Mbapee only took nine shots and created three big chances for the French national team. In the last match Mbappe finally got a goal contribution after the match against Poland.
Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said about Mbappe’s performance,
“Mbappe delivered a wonderful ball – but that was the only bit of quality in the final third that France showed.”
Many argued that Mbappe would be the key figure in the French side before the start of the tournament. But Mbappe could not deliver his best. While in the 2022 World Cup, Kylian Mbappe had an average of 1.11 goals and assists per 90 minutes compared to just 0.32 averages in Euro 2024. This clearly indicates that the former PSG forward has failed to give his best in this tournament.
However, amid everything, Mbappe also suffered a nose injury which forced him to wear a mask, and because of that Mbappe also missed the match against Netherlands.
Kylian himself came forward after they lost in the semi-final and said his Euro 2024 journey was a complete failure.
Following the France-Spain game, manager Didier Deschamps addresses the media about the team’s performance and that of Kylian Mbappe. He declared,
“I won’t assign greater responsibility to any one player than another. We weren’t at our best, and when you play a squad of that calibre from Spain in the semifinals, you have to be.”
What comes next?
Now that he is at Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe hopes to move on from the past and concentrate on his upcoming path. He also anticipates having a successful season.
