Lando Norris has a theory on why Daniel Ricciardo is struggling

Norris, Six Sports

Lando Norris believes that the characteristics of McLaren’s 2022 challenger has made it difficult for Daniel Ricciardo to get on top of the car.

There has been a stark difference between the 2022 campaigns of Norris and Ricciardo. While the latter has struggled to get going with only 17 points to his name, the Briton has scored 64 points with a podium to his name.

While Lando has been performing at an extremely good level this year, he understands some parts of his teammate’s struggles

Norris echoed that the MCL36 is a tricky car to drive.

“I do feel like it’s a difficult car to drive, our car. You know, I think our characteristics which he’s also had over the past few years, even Carlos [Sainz, ex-team mate] said it, they’re quite specific and unique so some of the driving styles you need are like not ones you kind of grow up learning, and therefore you have to adapt quite a bit.

Lando also attributed Ricciardo’s struggles to the different driving styles

“Some of my feelings are not translated to his feelings. And how we drive the cars is slightly different as well; I prefer a car with – I don’t mind as much instability from the car and kind of can push on the fronts more, and he prefers a car that is a bit more stable and made with a little more understeer.”

Norris also had troubles with the 2022 McLaren

The Briton revealed that he also struggled to tame the car, particularly at the beginning of the year despite his long tenure on the team.

“It’s the same for me,” he said. “Especially with this year, the car is very different. And some of the characteristics we had last year are gone, and we’ve introduced some other characteristics. And I’ve had to change my driving style.

“So at the same time I’ve also had to adapt to it. It’s not just because I’ve been with McLaren for four years that I know this car inside out, I struggled at the beginning of the season probably with my driving style a little bit more than what Daniel struggled with initially, in the first few tests, and I feel like I had to adapt quite a bit”.

While Norris has found a way to get the best out of McLaren, Ricciardo is still struggling to get on top of it. This means that McLaren has not got the consistency it needs from both drivers.

McLaren and Ricciardo have to work together closely to bring the Australian back to his best.
