Lauda titles Verstappen as a ‘once in a century’ driver

Franz Tost Germany

According to Mathias Lauda, the Dutch Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen, is a special breed of driver that “comes up once every 100 years.”

Verstappen just set the F1 record for most victories in a single season after winning his 14th race of the season in Mexico and already clinching his second championship two races earlier in Japan.

The Dutchman has been in red-hot form over the last two seasons as he extended his winning streak, winning 25 races in total with only nine races where he’s finished outside first or second place.

And Lauda, the late multiple World Champion Niki’s son, thinks Verstappen is a generational talent.

Lauda on Verstappen’s talent

In an exclusive interview at the Hunt vs. Lauda: The Next Generation premiere, Lauda told RacingNews365.com,

“This year, Mercedes is a step behind Red Bull and Ferrari – and that’s why the championship is not as exciting as last year, but I am so impressed with Max Verstappen.”

“He’s just a talent that will show up every 100 years, he’s just so good and I don’t see any weak point on him.

“Normally every racing driver has a weak point, but with Max, I don’t see any.

“He is so cool, relaxed and can handle the pressure better than anybody else.

“He’s always calm and in the beginning of his career, sometimes he did make mistakes or was too aggressive, but this year, he made a massive change.

“Last year he was sometimes over aggressive, but he is going to be very hard to beat in the future, and it’s going to be a nightmare for all the other drivers.

“In the same car, he is going to be very hard to beat, but on the other hand, you can never underestimate Lewis [Hamilton] when the car is good again.”

Verstappen is on the verge of concluding one of the most dominant campaigns in F1 history. It has been a season where records have tumbled and Verstappen has undoubtedly cemented his name as one of the future legends of the sport.
