Lautaro Martinez: Chelsea’s Next Big Gamble?

Turning on lead transfer rumors, Lautaro Martinez has gone from some even-sounding Chelsea striker hunt. But the champions also like splashing the cash, and, according to reports, they are preparing to rocket to the top of the hit list with a blockbuster bid involving big money and even a few familiar faces—including the currently suspended winger, Mykhailo Mudryk. To that, we must add Inter Milan’s Argentine captain, and that is just for good measure; Stamford Bridge may just find itself a new talisman.

Interesting then that Martinez, with his prolific scoring record, may not quite fit into Chelsea’s blueprint or that this could yet be a case of transfer soap opera again for the Luxury League. Let’s dive in.

Chelsea’s Eternal Striker Quest

Chelsea has been on a striker merry-go-round for years. The Blues want a goal machine, and Nicolas Jackson is proving a solid option, but only one for now. While prolific, dynamic, and proven at the highest level, Lautaro Martinez checks all the boxes.

It won’t be cheap to secure him, however. Martinez recently agreed to a five-year deal with Inter Milan and would be a prized capture, but prying him away would not just require deep pockets; ingenuity is required. Enter Chelsea’s creative strategy: Part of the package is offering Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, and Carney Chukwuemeka.

Mudryk in the Spotlight (For the Wrong Reasons)

Poor Mudryk. A torrid time since his big-money move to Chelsea, the 23-year-old winger has struggled to produce and is out with a provisional suspension for meldonium. He’s someone who, if anyone, deserves a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card (finally, that one was easy… we have to start somewhere) or perhaps a Stamford Bridge.

Some fans will be sad to see Mudryk go, but his departure could allow Martinez to become Chelsea’s focal point up front. As the irony goes, if Mudryk’s unfortunate suspension ends up unspinning the Chelsea striker puzzle, it’s a turn of events no one predicted.

The Lautaro Martinez Factor

Lautaro Martinez is not a traditional striker. He has a lot more to him than goals—from his lethal finishing to his playmaking—and that’s the part everyone ignores. He is Inter’s captain; he is a leader, a fighter, the sort of player who will not only see a crisis hit a team enough to get it rallying back from the ashes of mid-table misery (ahem, Chelsea) but will also be able to drag those accustomed to the winning ways of a past glory back to the start line also.

Martinez is costing Chelsea £262,000 per week, plus probably a shedload more, and the Blues will have to consider if that amount is worth it. On top of that, Inter’s hesitancy to let go of their superstar makes this deal as tricky as getting a cat to fetch.

Potential Alternatives to Lautaro Martinez on Chelsea’s Radar

Chelsea has other options if Martinez proves too elusive. Names who have been linked to the Blues include Benjamin Sesko, Victor Osimhen, and Victor Boniface. Yet we all know that nothing even comes close to that blend of flair, leadership, and big-game experience that Martinez provides.

Author’s Take: Is Lautaro Martinez Worth It?

I can’t resist laughing at the way Chelsea inevitably transfers shenanigans. Trading three players for Martinez is like trading three average toppings for one gourmet pizza and having hopes that lavish pizza is going to be worth it. Personally, I think Martinez could do really well in the Premier League, but Chelsea has to be careful. They could be out of luck and right back at square one looking for the next big thing.
