Liverpool yesterday confirmed the signing of Benfica’s star striker Darwin Nunez.

The youngster arrives at an initial fee of €75million that is said to rise to a club record fee of €100m. He has signed a six-year contract with the Reds.

Nunez’s shirt number at the Anfield has also been confirmed. He is going to wear the number 27 jersey which will become vacant when Divock Origi leaves the club as a free transfer at the end of the month.

The Uruguayan starlet had been on the radar of many top-flight teams like PSG, Manchester United, and Newcastle United. However, Nunez was convinced that his style of play fits Jurgen Klopp’s style.

He was absolutely flawless in the 2021-22 season. He scored 34 goals out of 41 games that he played for Benfica in all competitions. Moreover, he won the Primeira Liga Golden Boot this season scoring 26 goals in 28 games.

He also had a phenomenal record in the Champions League this season. He scored six goals from 10 games. The 22-year-old even scored in both the legs of the Champions League quarterfinals tie against Liverpool.

What did Darwin Nunez say after joining Liverpool?

He seemed really happy to be joining a club of this magnitude and he said:

I’m really happy and delighted to be here at Liverpool. It’s a massive club. I’d like to thank my partner and my parents and my son, who is a real source of pride for me.”

They’ve been really important to me in the stages in my career. I’m really proud of them, and for the work we do, me and my partner, as a team and I’m grateful to her that I’m here.”

It’s a pleasure to be here in Liverpool and I’m very happy to be a part of this great club. I’ve played against Liverpool and I’ve seen them in lots of games in the Champions League, and it’s my style of play. There are some great players here and I think it’s going to suit my style of play here.”
