Liverpool’s Goalkeeping Sensation: The Incredible Rise of Caoimhin Kelleher

Southampton manager Russell Martin has heaped praise on Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. The Reds came face-to-face against the Saints in the FA Cup tie on Wednesday.

The Irishman was given another start in the absence of Allison Becker after his heroic performance in the Carabao Cup final. Kelleher made a string of vital saves in the first half to keep Southampton at bay as the Championship side produced a strong start. Moreover, those saves proved out to be the difference between the two sides before Lewis Koumas puts the Reds ahead. Later on, Jayden Danns stole the show with a brace laying the final nails in the coffin to finish 3-0.

Kelleher: A future prospect for Liverpool goalkeeper needs

Caoimhin Kelleher really stepped up in the absence of Becker to clinch his club the Carabao Cup. Despite the loss, Russell was lauding the performance of the Irish international against his side. The Southampton boss felt that Kelleher made ‘really incredible’ saves to keep the Saints at bay early on. Speaking on iTV, Martin said,

I don’t think it’s a fair reflection. I think we’ve had the better chances in the game, I think we could have been 2-0 up before they even got close to our goal and I think the difference is the quality in finishing but I’m really proud of our performance. It’s quality, it’s composure… their goalkeeper made some really incredible saves, so I guess it’s all of that combined.

If there was ever any doubt, Kelleher has again proven himself as a top-quality goalkeeper and one of the best ‘backup’ goalkeepers around. The only fear is that the back-up goalkeeper at Anfield may want to leave in search of regular game time. However, Liverpool can take command on him by a good fee and keep him to shine between the sticks.
