Liverpool are heavily linked with the Benfica defender Antonio Silva. The Red’s likely January spending could reportedly start with defender.
The Reds have already been linked with a move for highly-rated centre-back Antonio Silva from Benfica. Portuguese newspaper A Bola now claims that Liverpool’s interest is ‘concrete’ and that “firm talks‘ will be held with the Eagles after the World Cup.
The 19-year-old is currently in Qatar with Portugal and has so far made one appearance in the final group stage game against South Korea.
Benfica teenager Antonio Silva: a solid defender
The Portuguese have been on the books of Benfica since 2016. Moreover, this season, he has emerged as an outstanding defender in Liga Portugal and rightfully earn a place in the Benfica starting XI. The defender has scored two goals in 10 league matches and one goal in 6 UEFA Champions League games so far this season.
Ex-Liverpool player Jamie Carragher is a fan of the Portuguese defender
The teenager can count Jamie Carragher among his fans. The former Liverpool man praised him highly after Benfica’s 2-1 Champions League win over Juventus last month.
In an interview with CBS Sports, Carragher said;
“The first goal is from that young defender I have highlighted a couple of weeks ago. I told you all about him, and there he is, Antonio Silva. I mentioned his defensive prowess. But goalscoring there as well. He is going to be a superstar.”
Should Liverpool seek and try to do a deal, they will hope that their good relations with Benfica, which has already brought Darwin Nunez to Anfield, will give them the upper hand in negotiations. Nevertheless, Silva is expected to cost any interested party around £45 million.
