Star Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez engaged in an altercation with Colombian fans, following Uruguay’s loss in the semi final in the Copa America 2024. Uruguay were enjoying an excellent tournament. However, they would fall short against Colombia. Despite having an extra man for almost the entire second 45, Uruguay were unable to equalize.
Uruguay would face Panama, USA and Bolivia in the group stage. Uruguay would beat Panama 3-1 in their opening game, with Liverpool star Darwin Nunez finding the back of the net. Thereafter, they would face Bolivia and win comprehensively by 5-0, with Nunez scoring again. Uruguay would cap off the group stages with a 100% record by winning the final game 1-0 against USA.
Subsequently, they would face Brazil challenge in the quarter finals. Uruguay were down to 10 men in the 74th minute with Nandez sent off! Although they would manage to beat Brazil on penalties after enduring a goalless draw. Consequently, Uruguay would set up a semi final against Colombia, who had hardly put a foot wrong throughout the tournament.
Colombia would take the lead with Daniel Munoz scoring just before the break. Moreover, the odd goal would prove to be sufficient as Uruguay were unable to bounce back. Subsequently, Colombia will be facing Argentina for the Copa America 2024 title!
Despite having won the competition for a record 15 times, Uruguay have failed to reach the Copa America finals since 2015!
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez attacks fans: Here’s why!
It was chaos all around the stadium after Colombia won over Uruguay. Some drunk fans were creating disorder in close proximity to friends and family of Uruguayan team. Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez would climb up the railings and would physically confront the fans. However, Nunez would be restrained by people around him.
Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez would defend his teammate’s actions. He added:
“There was no police and we had to defend our families. This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don’t know how to drink.”
The safety of Uruguayan friends and family was compromised. Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez would have to comfort his son after the game.
CONMEBOL was extremely unhappy with the news. Followingly, CONMEBOL went on to make a strong statement:
“There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field”.
Before the brawl in the crowd, players and coaching staff would themselves clash on to the field! Undoubtedly, the security was not great!
What’s next for Uruguay?
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez may be risking getting punished for his reaction. However, his actions are totally justifiable. Following the incident, the security of players and their families have come under spotlight. Moreover, the absence of police is something further to consider! Furthermore, people have also begun questioning the position of USA as a host nation for the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Uruguay will be facing Canada for third-place. Both teams have been impressive throughout the tournament. The fixture could prove to be extremely entertaining for the neutrals. Whereas, football fans will be hoping to see much more of football and a lot less of chaos in the stands.
