Liverpool reportedly are going to step up their pursuit to sign Darwin Nunez this season.

The forward’s stellar performance for Benfica has attracted a lot of elite club’s attention in recent weeks.

He had the form of the season this year for Benfica. He scored 34 goals in the 41 appearances that he made for the club in all competitions. Moreover, he scored 6 goals from 10 games in the Champions League.

The Red Devils seemed to have led the race to sign the Uruguayan this term. A report even said that United were even close to signing him.

Some reports suggested midfielder Andres Perriera could also be included in the deal for Nunez.

However, the Football Insider now reports that Liverpool are now ready to make a bid for the 22-year-old. This could hurt the prospects of Erik Ten Hag and United signing him.

It is said that Nunez is ‘keen’ on making a move to the Merseyside club. Moreover, Nunez will be offered Champions League football if he moves to Anfield.

He could even become a perfect replacement for Sadio Mane. Speculations are ripe that the Senegalese forward is going to leave Liverpool for Bayern this year.

Moreover, it is said that the player suits the profile of a Jurgen Klopp player. Liverpool would hugely benefit if they can sign the Uruguayan youngster.

The rise of Darwin Nunez at Benfica

Nunez still has three years left on his contract. Therefore, Liverpool would have to pay around £55m to acquire the forward from the Portuguese club.

Nunez arrived at Benfica from Almeria in 2020. Since arriving he has featured in 84 matches for Benfica.

During that tenure, he scored 47 goals. Moreover, in the Champions League last year he scored a goal in each leg of the quarter-final against Liverpool.
